CN celebrates opening of new Winnipeg Intermodal Terminal

WINNIPEG, Sept. 10, 2003 - CN today held a ceremony to mark the opening of a new $16 million Winnipeg Intermodal Terminal at Symington Yard on the eastern side of the city. The new terminal, which has been handling traffic since the end of July, was completed in less than one year from the date CN announced plans to relocate its Winnipeg intermodal facilities from south Winnipeg.

 

“The new Winnipeg Intermodal Terminal is a more efficient, customer-friendly facility than the one it replaces,” Keith E. Creel, CN senior vice-president Western Canada region, told the ceremony “Intermodal traffic is CN’s fastest-growing business segment, and this new facility will enable CN to meet the growing needs of our Winnipeg customers.”

 

The new terminal can handle 100,000 lifts per year (the number of containers transferred between trucks and trains), an increase of nearly 20 per cent from the 85,000 lift-per-year capacity of the older terminal. The new terminal can be expanded to accommodate future growth.

 

The new Winnipeg Intermodal Terminal is part of a network of 20 intermodal terminals and satellites across North America, providing daily train service across Canada and to the US and Mexico. The fully paved site, adjacent to CN’s main line and within the boundaries of CN’s Symington Yard, features two pad tracks totalling 9,400 feet for loading and unloading traffic, and four support tracks.

 

Canadian National Railway Company spans Canada and mid-America, from the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to the Gulf of Mexico, serving the ports of Vancouver, Prince Rupert, B.C., Montreal, Halifax, New Orleans, and Mobile, Ala., and the key cities of Toronto, Buffalo, Chicago, Detroit, Duluth, Minn./Superior, Wis., Green Bay, Wis., Minneapolis/St. Paul, Memphis, St. Louis, and Jackson, Miss., with connections to all points in North America.

Well i did that run from Chicago to Cleveland last night...so here goes...The two tracks are next to the steel mill are trains that go to willard Oh on the north side..The tracks that are next to the credit union on the south side go to indynapolis and tennesee and other places down there in Jonney Cash land...But its a Good Idea to ask first...Dolble stack trains are definatly heading east.At willard oh trains that leave from by the engine house go to DC and trains leavinmg further back on ther south side go to cleveland rember ask questions most workers are good public relations people..Many doulbe stack trains go to NJ...Also Bedford Park is the starting point for intermodal trains on CSX....as for heading back west...BN picks up there trains from CSX but CSX does not pick there trains up from BN cisiro.....Riverdale Drive INN at barr yard has Good Cheep food....have a safe day!

I caught outta S.D. once. I was told by a guy at the

mission to wait for the train (SF) to pick up some

cars at a certain location which wasn't far from the

mission. I rolled out on a covered hopper (grainer)

and the train picked me up at about 3 AM. This was 10

years ago. Good Luck.

Loma linda is a local bus ride from San Berdu. It

was the best place to catch east cause thats where

they put the helpers on the 'ol SP to go over Beaumont

hill. This is about 10 yrs old too.

If you are in S.D. ask around where to catch out.

If you can get to Yuma almost everything east from

there goes to Tucson.

Hi hoppers

 

Just a quick freight story from Europe. I went hopping about a month ago

from the small town of Taulov (Jylland, Denmark). I've done that before,

where everything has been smooth. This time, however, things were

somewhat more trying. In Denmark there's not a lot of freight hopping

going on (if you know anybody doing it at all in Scandinavia, please let

me know off list). So asking the crew would surely be a bad idea. So I

posed as a rail-fan, went to the office and asked a lot of questions,

among those, when does the trains leave and where to. I noticed the name

of the guy in charge and that same name was on the very house me and my

buddy were hiding out right in front of. God damn Taulov is such a small

ass town. Every person we saw there clearly wondered who the hell we

were. But we paid it no mind, because we weren't going to stay long.

Wrong.

The first night we screwed up and got chased by a guard with a

flashlight. Pretty amazing, because we were really being quite careful.

Anyway, we bunked in an abandoned barn and now we really had to be

careful the next day, 'cause the freight people were going to be on

their toes.

Only a few trains leave in the right direction every day. The next day,

we picked a train that didn't leave at all. So not until the third damn

evening in that small and very curious village did we get on a moving

train, witch took us to Milano, Italy.

But only because of the setbacks we suffered already did we settle for

that horrendous car we ended up in. It carried huge bags of dried

fish-food. That place was so fucking smelly! Not once during our 30 hour

ride, did we not smell that damn rotten harsh stank. And when we got off

and asked people for directions, they thought we had some weird decease

smelling like that.

Besides the smell, the trip was alright. We were close to being caught

on the border between Aus-tria and Italy. Two guards with flashlights

checked out our car. But they had been standing outside for so long,

that we'd had time during the noisy periods of time when trains passed

by to cut down our hammocks, clean up and hide between the fish-food

bags. But that was pretty exciting.

 

That's it. Took a regular train back home. The heat was incredible, so

we didn't bother trying. It would have been much tougher going the other

way too, because of all the trafficking of drugs and immigrants going

north.

anybody have any experience on hopping thru the desert in the middle of the summer? i did it to vegas a couple years ago and grabbed a contaner car porch with no shade and i almost died in the heat. i'm going to bring a shitload of water this time, and make sure i grab a spot with some shade. any info or experiences would be great.

 

i'm also in the middle of putting together a story of my trip home (to LA) from fort collins, CO.
