What language are you most comfortable in?
  3. I'm at work and I really didn't want to reply to this. But here it is. 1) You're right, the US does accept some measure of collateral damage. I guess it is easy not to have any collateral damage when the entirety of Western culture is your intended target? 2) There is a difference between killing people for "defense" and killing people for "principle." It all depends on your classification of defense. If you think of the west as "attacking" you through globalization, free speech and civil liberties, than yes, you are faithfully defending your culture against ours. I just find that a pretty theocratic definition of "attack" or "defense." In the good ol' US of A we think of defense as what someone does when they are physically attacked or physically threatened. When someone makes fun of us, or tries to spread their ideas, we either listen and debate or ignore them. Unless I'm utterly mistaken, and if so I'm punching the next Hare Krishna that tries to sell me a flower at the airport. 3) The idea that a group of people can be "provoked" into violence by cartoon's for instance shows the underlying difference between Western culture and Islamic culture. It is a normative difference that cannot be supported on any objective basis. We value individual liberties, equality and democracy. You value tradition, theocracy and conformity (I'm trying extremely hard to use the least judgment-laden terms I can). We have a difference in opinion. If we can't accept that and leave one another alone, then I repeat my previous statement: If you want war, then war it's gonna be. Oh, and by the way, we have bigger guns than you do...
  4. The deal is people have been "provoking" the good christian and jewish folks for going on 2000 years, but you don't see christians or jews burning embassies or renaming pastry...
  5. Blech :yuck:. The open society and its enemies was a load of bullshit. He doesnt even discredit platos Ideas and hardly dicusses his own. Quoted post [/b] Thats the problem I have with the whole philosophy. If there is no such thing as merit, how can you value post-modern theory over modernism? Stanley Fish said with respect to post-modern literature "It has rid me of the necessity of being right, I am only required to be interesting."
  6. I'm mostly interested in post-modernism as a philosophy with respect to critical legal theory. Since the law prizes rationality so highly, PM theory is a provocative (read: scary) prospect. And to some extent I'm with them. Legal realism, for instance, is closely related if not a full part of post-modern theory and argues that judges do not make decisions based on rationality. I agree to a large extent that discretion and intuition make up decisions more than say precedent or neutral principle. On the other hand I don't quite buy the idea that rationality, as a decision making tool, is non-existent. Then again, I am hugely biased towards systems theory and logic as applied to law, so I am a big sucker for a purely logical (even textualist) argument. It's hard to let go of that. They're still scared to let me teach people, I think they're afraid I'll say something disruptive. Actually I just turned in my first seminar proposal, so we'll see. Mostly I'm just trying to get publicized. I'm not quite clear on post-modernism in the arts, or if that has to do with post modern philosophy. I guess I could see graffiti as shocking and "in your face" which is highly valued in post modern argument. (From what I've read in the past week and a half.) Oh ya, Heavy, have you heard of the Sokal affair?
  7. Okay, fine, you caught me. I am, in fact, a pseudo intellectual. I asked a question about a topic I don't understand, that must be what tipped you off. I'm sorry I don't live up to your standards. Imagine all of the mean things you could say about me if you found out I was trying to be a professor. You'd probably give me a complex. I better keep that on the down low. Heavy_Lox What you said I agree with to some extent. In so far as truth is not knowable, and that our theories are approximations of what we're trying to explain. But that's about as far as I'm willing to go with it. I can't cosign the idea that reason, rationality or logic are social constructs that betray a bias. Are they often used to mask bias, of course, does that mean that they have no vitality without it, I don't think so. But what do I know, I'm just a pseudo intellectual.
  8. So I started reading an anthology of Post-modernism in a hopeless attempt to understand a Critical Theory course I'm taking. Basically what it boils down to is that there is no such thing as truth or reason and everything is a social construct betraying our underlying prejudices. I don't know if I buy it... Do you?
  9. You're missing the point. He was a MUSLIM

  16. I like this... "Check it, you really have no case." Sounds like wise advice to me, and he's so sure of it. He doesn't even have to qualify it with "I'm not a lawyer." He just comes out and says "Check it, I did the research, I had my paralegal look a couple things up and as it turns out, you're really out of luck bub..." Fucking rock on neater, rock on...

  21. That's what I'm talking about exactly. I don't know what comes on after Prince is over, I think it might be Murphy Brown and then The Cosby Show, but I think the kids shows that start at like 4:30 are beginning to infect my dreams and make me angry... "Swiper no swiping" the fuck is the swiper, I saw this shit today. Yes Steve Austin it is the show where they use Spanish words for things.
  22. For God's sake, now there is a commercial for "Kid's Bob" which is a CD of shitty pop sungs sung by little annoying white kids. If my kids would come out like that I could never marry a white woman. Cut your fucking hair, punk! That song was shitty to begin with. I need to get the fuck out of the house...
