These are lettering rules that have been in place for ages. There aren't that many people around nowadays that even know this shit, not because it's a big secret, but just because the knowledge has died out with things like compute fonts and all that garbage. There's no one to point people in the right direction. Very few actual real sign painters, and typesetters, and penmen around compared to what there used to be.

 

In general, there are three basic kinds of lettering. Gothic, Roman and Script. The tattoo fonts like this are based on Roman style. With that there are rules.

Here's the basic rule. If the slant on the letter is like a military salute, that is to say, the bottom is further t the right and the top, further to the left, the bar leaning to the left then it is thick. Leaning to the right, thin. The middle part of the N, the middle of the S curve, the rightmost bar on an A, the left on a V. On the M you break it down to two A's in a row and use that rule, on a W, it's two V's.
