Zed_Eastwood
"The Interborough Rapid Transit Company is the first New York City Subway Company; it opened for service on October 10th 1904. The first subway line in NYC was the Broadway line, later becoming the #1 line. For New Yorkers, seeing graffiti was relatively common by 1969. In the 1950s and 1960s street/gang graffiti existed, but it was largely confined to boroughs other than Manhattan. The early 1970s would change that forever. In an interview*, subway Writing pioneer Phase2 tells what he saw on the subway trains of New York City in the late 1960s: “When you were in Manhattan the trains were destroyed [covered with tags], but when you went to the Bronx the trains we basically clean." *interview conducted by VideoGraff productions 1989. This and other strong evidence confirms the following irony: The I.R.T. #1 line was not just the first subway line to be built, but it was the first subway line to experience graffiti. The I.R.T. #1 line begins its service in The Bronx. After only three stops in the Bronx it crosses the Harlem River and travels through Washington Heights, an ethnically diverse neighborhood on the northern most tip of Manhattan. From there, the line heads south through Harlem and continues underneath Broadway and 7th Avenues, through the length of Manhattan, ending at South Ferry on the southern most tip of Manhattan. Until the end of the New York City subway writing culture, the #1 line, known affectionately among writers as “Broadway”, remained a special target." excerpt from Steel Wheels 1986-1997 "BROADER THAN BROADWAY" awesome fliks HV.
