BRAINTREE, Mass. -- Stepping into a Gap store at the South Shore Shopping Plaza on a recent evening, Laura Munro became a research statistic.

Twelve feet above her, a device resembling a smoke detector, mounted on the ceiling and equipped with a hidden camera, took a picture of her head and shoulders.

The image was fed to a computer and shipped to a database in Chicago, where ShopperTrak RCT Corp., a consumer research firm, keeps count of shoppers nationwide using 40,000 cameras placed in stores and malls.

ShopperTrak, whose profile has risen this holiday season as appetite grows for more ...

Airbus may install hidden cameras on

aircraft - claim

European aircraft manufacturer Airbus SAS is reportedly considering installing hidden cameras on its aircraft to keep watch over passengers.

The hidden cameras would be built into light fittings above the seats,

thus allowing the crew members to monitor passengers from the flight deck. The cameras would be designed to reassure passengers who are wary of flying after the 11 September terrorist attacks. The company is also hoping that the system would deter would-be hijackers. An Airbus security expert has stated that the tiny cameras would be surrounded by a ring of infrared light emitting diodes, enabling the black and white images to be captured at night, reported WENN.

quite a bit about reference information. it's all pretty real,

and all very scary.

i'll post the link once she sends it to me. can't recall if it's in the mall of america, or not.

her response:

"It's called the "Once Famous Boutique" and here is an article about it:

http://com.bradley.edu/faculty/lamoureux/website2/nmt/28/28b.html

Its creators also opened a freestanding "retail lab" -- "Branding agency will open downtown 'store'"

http://twincities.bizjournals.com/twincities/stories/2001/10/15/story3.html

Here are some of the insights the store gained:

"Men are from sharper image, women are from Victoria's Secret: retail 'lab' uncovers the differences in men and women shoppers"

http://www.allbusiness.com/marketing-advertising/branding-brand-development/553361-1.html

This article discusses the legal implications if such a store were to be introduced in Scotland:

http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/s2.cfm?id=500372002

According to the article, Accenture (an evil company that features prominently in Spychips) has created the same kind of "store":

> While Fame has a novel concept, it is not the first company to come up with the "retail lab" concept, said Tom Holliday, president of Chicago-based Retail Advertising and Marketing Association (RAMA). Chicago-based Accenture operated a food and apparel store in its hometown for research on consumer-buying decisions.

> As far as I know, the store no longer exists. However, the creator of the store, Tina Wilcox, has gone on to create a firm called "Black Design" (I couldn't make this stuff up) that does similar things in established retail stores.

Here's an article on all of this from Sorensen Associates, the company that puts hidden tracking devices in shopping carts to watch people in stores:

http://www.popsg.org/views/05feb03.html

The creator of the Once Famous Boutique, Tina Wilcox of a market research agency called FAME, left the company to co-found a new company called "Black Design." (You couldn't make this stuff up!)

It's at:

1004 Summit Avenue Minneapolis, MN 55403-3062 Phone: (612) 236-1880

When I just called the number (at 7 AM on a Saturday) I got a recording, so they're still out there.

As you are interested in such issues, I'm attaching my article titled "Supermarket Cards: Tip of the Retail Surveillance Iceberg" which contains other examples of retail surveillance.

I'd be interested to know your reaction to it.

In freedom,

Katherine Albrecht"

I got a new passport(british) just before they started embedding rfid chips in them. my little brother has a chip in his passport.

although in england at least they might be recalled as people have worked out how to fuck with them.

Interesting. There are plenty of ways to fck with RFID chips, from smashing with a hammer to using a mircowave oven. My current passport will expire in several more years and it's the older one with out the chip.

I know where the cameras are at my work.. any way to find out if they have any hidden ones?

usually, hidden cams will be on decoy fire sensors on cielings...fiber optics on TV and Cable Boxes...Over head wall Clocks etc.. ...Yeah, Lord C is right though. that spy shop detector should do it.

Cams that record public activity in public, on public property need to be viewable by the public at the local public library, DMV waiting area, jury selection room, local TV access, and downloads from your city and county websites. All free for the public.

It's you on camera anyway, maybe they should pay you

u.s. courts ruled that we have no expectation of privacy in public places.

however, i do not consider a restaurant table a public place. i expect to be able to speak freely

without fear of being taped when eating lunch, dinner, etc. it's just fucking nuts.

they are trying to get us used to it. i don't think i will ever be comfortable.
