reGIo
City, sheriff plan to use surveillance watchdogs to catch lawbreakers By Eugene Tong, Staff writer SANTA CLARITA - City and sheriff's officials are drafting a plan to install surveillance cameras in vandalism-plagued areas to catch criminals in the act and quell the recent spike in graffiti. The number of cameras and installation locations has not been determined, said Dianna Boone, the city's community services administrator. The city staff and Santa Clarita sheriff's station deputies have scheduled a meeting Monday to iron out the details. The program, slated to begin this summer, likely will cost several thousand dollars. "We're looking at purchasing surveillance equipment," she said Friday. "As to how we'll work with residents and businesses, we haven't ascertained yet. "We'll be working with the Sheriff's (Department) to determine (their location). The areas vary all the time where the crimes are being committed." City officials began considering surveillance cameras about six months ago, amid a wave of tagging and other spray-paint vandalism, sheriff's Lt. Mike Dunkle said. In 2004, cleanup cost City Hall about $223,000 - roughly double the amount as in previous years. Sheriff's deputies have made more than 20 graffiti vandalism arrests over the past three months. "Ideally, what you want to do is catch them," Dunkle said. "There are people in the community who want to help. The more eyes you have out there, the better chance you have in arresting and prosecution." The cameras won't completely eradicate graffiti, but they will help law enforcement contain the growing problem, Dunkle said. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," he said. "People out here take a lot of pride in our community and we want it to stay manageable. ... It'll never stop, but we want to manage it." Though often decried by privacy advocates, surveillance cameras have been a popular tool for law enforcement agencies to keep tabs on criminal activity in such major cities as London and New York. This past week, the Los Angeles Police Department unveiled plans to install 10 cameras in downtown's Fashion District to look out for street vendors selling pirated DVDs and other counterfeit goods. Among the systems under city review are infrared-activated, roof-mounted cameras designed to beam alerts to the sheriff's station or property-security officers when triggered, Dunkle said. "We're trying to find something that meets our needs as well as the needs of the community," he said. No strangers to public cameras, city officials last year installed camera systems at five local intersections to catch red-light violators. The bulletproof watchdogs tallied more than 3,000 violations in the four months after activation. "We look forward to implementing a system to assist sheriffs in catching vandals and criminals who commit crimes in Santa Clarita," Boone said
