Back in the early 70's the Milwaukee had numerous problems with vandals
shooting at the trains during the middle of the night going thru the
    "better" part of town.
With no fanfare at all several of the rear end train
crew began to carry small caliber weapons and for awhile returned fire (all
    obvoiously unauthorized).
    Suddnely the problems stopped.
However when management became aware of the situation the return fire issue was
considered a little too radical and was stopped. But for alittle while at
least the trains made it thru the area unscathed.
