High Priest
Im going to assume that there is a fair amount of user's on 12oz who have, at some point listend to one of or both of these bands. I like both - so here's a thread that cover's bio's/ history/ discography of both bands. *This information will be taken from other site's. At The Drive In:"Combining emotional melodies and an upbeat rhythm moving at an unpredictable rate, At the Drive-In definitely stuck out in their hometown El Paso, TX. Formed in early 1994, the group debuted soon after with their first EP, Hell Paso, followed by a brief tour across the Lone Star state. With a lineup secured around Cedric Bixler (vocals), Omar Rodriguez and Jim Ward (guitar), Paul Hinojos (bass) and Tony Hajjar (drums), At the Drive-In continued on with a second EP (Alfaro Vive, Carajo!) and toured mostly empty houses and clubs across the western United States. A small gig in Los Angeles -- with an audience consisting of only nine people -- somehow got the attention of Flipside Records, who released the band's first full-length Acrobatic Tenement in 1996. With constant energy and a stubborn enthusiasm to continue, At the Drive-In began to develop an audience, helped out by constant touring and word-of-mouth hype. Their 1997 follow-up EP El Gran Orgo had more of a melodic bite, but their musical depth and originality still remained. In Casino Out followed in 1998, and 2000 saw the release of Relationship of Command. After the band went on indefinite hiatus in 2001, Bixler and Rodriguez formed the Mars Volta, while Ward, Hajjar, and Hinojos moved on to Sparta." High Priest
THE MARS VOLTA: "Picking up the pieces from At the Drive-In, Cedric Bixler and Omar Rodriguez formed the Mars Volta and wasted little time in branching out into elements of hardcore, psychedelic rock, and free jazz that expanded on the boundaries of their previous work. Although their previous band's demise ultimately arrived before they were able to truly capitalize on their mounting commercial triumphs, the Mars Volta immediately impressed with their willingness to eschew conventional logic and push themselves into new artistic directions instead of opting for the more marketable sounds. Interestingly, their progressive yet streamlined approach gave them the early lead among critics against their former bandmates in Sparta, the more emo-leaning of the bands resulting from the split. Enlisting friends Ikey Owens (also of the Long Beach Dub All-Stars) and Jeremy Michael Ward onboard, having played with both in their progressive dub side project De Facto, their debut EP, Tremulant, arrived in 2002. Still, as much of their reputation was built on the strength of their live show, their highly energetic performances resulted in a wave of word-of-mouth hype that elevated the band to near-mythic proportions." BIO: Cedric Zavala - Vocals Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - Guitar Jon Theodore - Drums Juan Alderete - Bass Isaiah Owens - Keyboards Discography: *Full Length's De-Loused in the Comatorium A fully realized concept album inspired by the suicide of a close friend of Mars Volta founders Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavalas, De-Loused in the Comatorius narrative consists of fantastic worlds and adventures that Cedric imagines the friend experiencing while in a coma following an unsuccessful suicide attempt. Although the story ends tragically, the creators insist that this is a celebration of the adventurous and daring life that their friend lived. Yellow Feets
Yeah, I heard about them from all the hype going on the net. They're pretty good. I'm still adjusting to dude's vocals though. A little too high pitch for me but I can handle shit. Has anyone seen them live?
High Priest
Ive seen Volta live on 2 occasions, once for the show at the wiltern (where they debuted "the widow") and once opening for APC - who i didnt stay for, infact quite a large portion of the audiance left once Volta finished their set. As far as Cedric's voice, on the new material you can tell he has worked alot on control and his falsetto sound's much better...

High Priest
Yea, thats a problem with Volta show's they sell out within minutes of going on sale - The show at the Wilter sold out in i believe it was around 10-12 minutes, and due to overwhelming demand they played two other shows back to back, which was great - i had a couple of friends go to all threee shows, but the tickets were not cheap so i wasnt lucky enough to do the same. If you ever get the chance to see them live i recommend it, the material sounds just as strong live as it does on the album, and there is alot of improv. - so you hear alot of things that are specific only to that night.
