angelofdeath
word up on old crow medicine show, and the old blues guys. django is one hell of a guitar player. if you want to hear his style extended to bluegrass dont miss out on Clarence White, in his Kentucky Colonels days. appalachian swing is the best instrumental album of all time. the current king of old time music in my eyes is norman blake. while he doesnt necessarily do the old songs the way they were originally done, no one that i know of knows more old time songs than this man. some of his newer albums, he does some very different sounding stuff. playing songs on dobro, guitjo's, banjo, tenor banjo, finger picking stuff, as well as flat picking stuff. i cant live with out old country. not pop country garbage. hank williams III is kick ass, as well as wayne the train hancock and dale watson. stanley brothers, bill monroe, flatt and scruggs, bluegrass album band, del mccoury band, tony rice, etc etc. dont get me started. essential to anyone's old time collection is early doc watson recordings, in particular with clarence ashley. dont sleep on gid tanner and the skillet lickers, uncle dave macon, riley puckett, roscoe holcomb, and all them old time mountain guys. ohnoone
i scanned this thread but i didnt see two favorites of mine mentioned. the avett brothers and the pine hill haints. the avetts are a little more "accessible" with the pretty voices and the slow jams, (those guys get laid so much i cant even imagine, plus theyre from NC so big ups to them,) but they also like to hoot and holler and cover doc watson at mach 10 speed. the pine hill haints play homeade instruments and are a little more real ,alot less polished. thanks for the other reccomendations though. shai
http://www.twogallants.com/ I've been pimping these guys on 12 oz. for almost two years now. They're my favorite band of all time, and they deserve to be heard far and wide. Especially by people who are into old-time music...this band is one of the things in this world that keeps me going. Seriously. I wouldn't lie about this. They're THAT good.

King Of Hell
I hope some of thses bands blow up because they may play near me more often, however, its hard for me to believe they will get bigger than "good sized club" status, for the simple reason that they dont appeal to most people. I wish they did, and I wish people would come around to how amazing this older music was/is. The thing is, its not hip hop and its not some new scenester blend of half assed hardcore, and or metal watered down with lyrics about suicide and broken hearts. Its hard to take MYSPACE pictures to this kind of music.

grim540
the pictue above is from a free show about a month ago, only about five of us knew who the hell they were, but by the end of the show everybody was a fan.... the avett brothers sold out the bowry(sp) ballroom in NYC, some of us still have good taste, they are old timey sappy love song type of guys but they were raised on rock and fucking roll. My best friends father is considered the best mandolin player in history, he has had a Grammy winning bluegrass band for the last 40 years. IF any of you guys are sleeping on the avett brothers wake the fuck up and go see a show.... ok I got on a rant for some reason that I forgot.....but it's my B-day and I cannot sleep because of all the YAY(first time in five years) that went up my nose, but I have some dirty bar slut that I have to kick out my apt stat because they beer googles have worn out..... godammit I am sahring to much on a fucking online forum.... seeking you cut me alot of slack about 4 years ago, but not trying to steal your thunder or anything of the sort, but the Black Out posse has been prestent for a long fucking time over here, this is my offical request for acceptence.....I am not a regular or anything of the sort but give me some credit.... I have some storys to tell, but I need a box of 64 color crayons and some constrution paper now.... dammit this is some I will regret in aboout 8 hours...
