RumPuncher
Official Thread Jack: Resident tech guy Casekonly has offered to help out with our nerd needs. Consider this thread: Everything You Wanted To Know About Techs* *but were afraid to ask hey casek..... here's a question: you know how if you have a 16x9 TV and you have a DVD player with 'widescreen output' then everything fits nicely? Well is there a software dvd player (even one I'd be willing to pay for) that lets you tell the player to send the 16x9 signal out? or the simple version: I'm going to get a 16x9 computer monitor, and I dont want to have to start buying anamorphic DVDs. Can I set it so 'fullscreen' on the software player knows that it's 16x9 instead of 3X4 ??? winner gets a prize.

casekonly
btw kilo, i was thinking of starting a computer related thread in here...sort of a 'caseks computer corner' type deal. i can answer questions and give brief tutorials on optimization, security, software for different purposes and whatnot...think it's a good idea or not? oh, and powerdvd has to be one of the best software dvd players out. i have been using it for a long long time. its abilities are unsurpassed. what type of video card do you have? edit: it's not freeware, but it can be...shareaza....k-lite, etc.
Guest
The Computer Corner is a great idea! See I dont have this computer yet... I'm getting it soon. Now I have a video breakout box worth tens of thousands, but it's work... so not much fun. and the prize I mentioned before.... \/ BANNED! :haha:
casekonly
haha. bring me a shrubbery! i'll start on the computer thread in a while. if you're having this compruter built, have an ati 9500 put in. i've got a radeon 7500 right now and it's top notch for the price. ati puts out quality products and the 9500 is perfect for video stuff. check it out on http://www.ati.com unless you're gonna go with some crazy silicon graphics card that you find on ebay *hint.... Guest
that was subtle. actually I'm not sure about which video card to get. All I know is space and power will be at a premium as I'm looking at getting a shuttle SB75G2 (check google) and any decent widescreen 17-inch LCD with a TV tuner. Really it's a media center. I dont play games.
casekonly
well, ati isn't necessarily for gaming. i rarely play games on my pc....save for the occasional tour of vice city (on a fucking 400 mhz...can you believe that?) the shuttle looks super nice. so, by media center i guess you're talking about something you can playmusic on, watch vids, or just screw around on. i would definitely go with an ati 9500. regardless of what you're going to do. Guest
pretty much a place to keep all my MP3's together and to use my Traktor DJ software to do some mixes. Plus a few ROM games and of course.... porn. hahaha... Somehow I've collected like 60GB of mp3s without ever really owning a computer to play them on. Herbivore
i got my hands on an ATi Radeon 9800 All-In-Wonder on sale for $199 (after rebates and all that jazz) at CompUSA.... i couldn't believe it, because it's normally around $350-$400, so i had to grab it.... and i couldn't be happier.... casekonly
ok, kids, you've been waiting on this whether you know it or not. my attempt to get rid of all other computer related threads and compress them down to one giant information filled super-thread. so, here it is...i'm about to flex some nerd skills at ya in the most simple ways. my aim is to help you, the user make your computer run at full capacity, as securely as possible, and answer some hardware/software related questions. so, you're askin' yourself, 'why is casek doing this? why is he giving away such priceless information for free?' my answer: BECAUSE I'M A FUCKING NICE GUY, THAT'S WHY. NOW GET YOUR ASS IN THE KITCHEN AND FIX ME A HAM SAMMICH, WOMAN! SECTION 1;) OPTIMIZATION keeping your computer healthy is very important. to keep it in a condition in which you can play games, watch vids, browse your favorite message board, or even look at asian porn while sipping your forty. by now, if you use the internet at all, you should know that this bitch is slap full of spyware. you should lso know that spybot s&d is a good program to keep that shit off your computer. here's a link http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html also very important, as with most software, to update the definitions so it can find that new b/s spyware that companies come out with so that they can add your name to another fucking list... there's also another nift program called adaware link: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware opinions differ from person to person, but i think spybot beats it out. however, i do know people who use both on their computer. ok, so now we've got our spyware removal programs... let's move on section 1:b clean up your fucking internet tracks. i use mozilla firefox...it's nice, but some people (slaves) still use microsoft explorer. i'll cover both. mozilla: clean up your history and cookies. tools/options/privacy 'clear all' it won't hurt ya. just bookmark the pages you frequent. turn your default history settings down to 2 days. if you browse the same pages, that's all you need. i used to keep that shit on 0, but i need it to be quick since i'm on dialup. internet explorer: tools/internetoptions/ 'delete cookies' and 'clear history' also 'delete temporary internet files. it's junk...you don't need it. set your history button to 0 days. it helps, but doesn't clean up all your shit. here's how. my computer/c:/winnt/temp select all of it and trash it. it's not called temp for nothing. now, on to the dumb shit. clean out your docs on the start up button...right above the c'settings' button...it can slwo down your computer...go to settings/taskbar and start menu/advanced and hit the 'clear button' booyah! another little crap button that doesn't do a whole hell of alot is the button in your start menu/accessories/disk cleanup. make sure to hit that shit every few days. it doesn't do a whole lot, but what it does can keep your system in check. personally, i have a proxy tool (we'll get to that subject in my security section) that clean out temp files, recently played media files, word docs, etc all in one fatal click. it's "steganos internet anonymizer 5" in case you're curious. now for the hardcore shit of the shit. the windows xp and 2000 services. SECTION 1c SERVICES this is where the real deal goes down. windows has a ton of services that start up with your computer that you (can you fucking believe it) DO NOT NEED. "you see that can over there? microsofts. that table,too...all microsofts" -told to me by a black man who i regard as some kind of looney guardian angel...long story ok, the services menu can be navigated to by going to start menu/settings/control panel/administrative tools/services WARNING: BY TURNING OFF SOME SERVICES YOU CAN JEOPARDIZE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION AS WELL AS OTHER THINGS. DO NOT BUST UP IN THERE LIKE YOU OWN THE PLACE ok, with that over with, i'll link you to the two charts that are the easiest to follow.. WIN XP USERS WINDOWS 2000 USERS to end or set these services, simply right click them and choose automatic, manual, or disabled. YUO MUST RESTAR FOR YOUR CHANGES TO TAKE EFFECT. start with messenger and indexing. you don't need either of those services on. proceed with turning thing on or off at your own risk. make one or two choices at a time, restar, and make sure all is still in check. that is the safe way to go about it. write what you're turning off, too.... also, see charts for what is safe. it's all on the charts...all of it. if you fuck up your computer by rushing in to this, it's not my fault....btw: it's only a computer and it can be fixed, just be careful and you'll be ok. ok, that's enough for now. i'll add some more software and the next section on security later on. if you have any questions, suggestions, or software name drops, drop a post on here. DISKEEPER PRO does an excellent job as a microcrap defrag replacement. look it up, try it out. stay tuned, my computer/internet security thread is gonna be the illyun like gonzalez. edit: for spelling....my fingers aren't as fast as my brain. casekonly
i succesfully tested spysweeper and came up with no spyware at all. spybot has been doing an excellent job. just keep getting the updates, even if you have to do it manually. i update alot. pfffffft: i need more information. what app is giving you the errors, does it perform normally when you use it if you can use it? restart and copy the text and paste it in here if possible...or take a screen shot with the ole' print screen button. badmotorfinger
this is such bullshit me and dirty habit tried to get this idea kicked off months ago , but apparently mah nigga casek is that dude , so fuck it. hahaha anyway , heres my whole veiw on the internet browser subject.... pound for pound dollar for dollar (of course not spent by me ever) opera is the best browser i have used thus far. ive used everything except thunderbird. the only issue i have is with compatibility to very certain sites (which im almost certain you can adjust within operas prefrences) but since ive started using it almost 3 years ago , my computer hasnt been clobbered by all of those nasty things that make things a nightmare. in fact i endorse it so much that i recomend it to clients on a regular basis as a way to prevent me from paying them house calls every 3 months (which maybe i shouuldnt have done ;) ) but alas , yes , download and find a reg key for it , its a sure bet. xo mikro137

casekonly
Watcher: i dunno. i do have sys mech, but it can really, really fuck some shit up if people don't watch what they clean up....dll's have been known to go missing. that can be a pain for any regular 'user'. mikro: beotch! haha....actually, it'd be really nice if you and dhabz joined in this topic and layed down some info. as for opera...wow, big subject. i've used opera. i've spent time talking with opera on cold winter nights. opera and i have done the nasty....opera don't get down like mozilla. opera ain't got shit on mozillas slick moves and salty attitude. i prefer mozilla by far...but hey, that's just personal preference. and why the fuck do you not want to go back to clients houses???what the fuck, that is more money....damn you! haha. j/k. i feel ya. i'd be more likely to recommend firefox being as how it's freeware and most people don't want an 'illicit' copy of anything on their comps....well, ok, most old people.
