Nothing crashed. The CD drive in my laptop is one of the old dockable units, and it's just worn out.

I had to use cfdisk to install Ultima, and the CD drive was dropping every other package during the install.

It ran Damn Small for an hour or so, and I was just gonna install that when the drive packed it in for good. I don't know exactly what's wrong with it, but my guess is that I just need to replace it. Seven years seems pretty old for an optical drive, to me.

In case you're interested, it's a Compaq DRN-8040B dockable DVD drive,m made by Toshiba.

As I said, I still have a 3.5" drive to work from, so I'm gonna put Basic Linux on the machine to see if anything else went wrong. If I can boot that up and get a console then I'm all good.

DamnSmall is awesome! I put it on my desktop and it's like having a whole new computer.

Mainter, what do you know about partitioning primary NTFS drives with PartitionMagic? I just got the demo version, and I want to put a boot partition on my desktop for DSL. It's that good, you should throw it on that old box you got, and see for yourself.

I don't want to start fucking around till I get an expert opinion, however.

do i hear the sound of mainter building a cluster?

sparo: that partition needs to be fat32.

wish i had that cracked version of pmagic to hook you up with. got rid of it a while back. guess i could d/l it again if mainter hasn't got one in stock. try before you buy...heh.

Yeah, I know it has to be a fat32 but I don't want to erase anything by accident.

Is it pretty straightforward or am I gonna be up all night doing this? And, once I get done, do I just load up the live CD and go find the correct partition and format it w/cfdisk or is there more to it than that?

Bear in mind that I A) have one dead drive to deal with and B) have never used this app before.

How long will that be up for (I'm guessing that you're seeding it)? I'm in DSL live CD, and I think I'm gonna go eat something and pass out soon...maybe I'll wake up really early and try it out.

Oh, and I use BitLord...I rarely use torrents. I'll only do it if I can't find a mirror for something I need to DL that's fast enough.

I'll look into this tomorrow.

mac virus?

HA told you that MACS were not safe for long

[/b]

Yup... I think the only reason Macs are considered safe is because hackers aren't bothering to make viruses for them, due to the fact that the majority of the world uses Windows.

Anyway, johhny ballbags... it appears as though your motherboard does not exist... heh.

yeah sense Macs made a big advancesment using unix kernal hackers got it real easy to make basic trojans right on the command line they will find so many holes in Macs its not even funny if someone would really take the time to make a good one they would be done for them A/V programmers got there work cut out for them i might have to look into macs and virus recovery make some more moeny on the side

hey has anyone heard the new ploy that microsoft is doing for windows xp

for those who have a hacked version of XP windows made a batch file in there updates (not the genuine key thing) that is set to run it will add something to the registry any registry watching programs cannot read it then it will crash your computer let you bring it back up but there will not be any icons start menu nothing cannot go to the command line and says please buy a full version windows xp at a local retail shop thank you.

i have looked around and people are saying its like getting zapped by the cable company they are using the web and just searching everyones computer threw port 8098

i have seen it 2 times this week i do not know if its a virus or what

Man, a UNIX based trojan? That's fucked up...I read up on that last night, it doesn't look good for anyone using a *NIX based system.

I guess we all have to look out now. No bueno...
