Boxcarro--been to Restarents like that---The dirter the bathroom the better the food.

Recomend Ms. Bellows Falls Diner in Bellows Falls--Real Maple Syrup on giant french toast

NECR RR stop is across the river though in the Ind Park in N Walpole NH,Great ROL and Cigar Shop that is super cheap. Bums hang out at the station and the drop in has really great food and hot showers.

Citys need more Drop Ins for the homeless---Warren Buffet are you listening?Pethaps my shares of BN which is now Berkshire Hathaway will get me lucky enough to shake hands with the ol man who WAS in the great depression.

En route to New York City...Selkirk to N Bergen NJ--NY city despite having lots of public transit requires a lot of walking,Not a good idea to have a huge backpack subways have stairs and bump people. NJ yards are hot and backpaks make you stick out. The Bronx is my favorite neighborhood. Great latino south american Food near the Hunts Point market and CSX Yard via the Longwood subway stop. CSX N bound times have been fcking with me out of Hunts Point. Carefull where you step as you could be knee deep in NYC sewage. This yard is in a huge trench and half underground with high speed trains whipping by..one false move and your on the westbound. Drop in center in old warehouse. I might just take Metro North and hitchhike out of Poughkipske and maybe bag a Vassar Girl...

Buffalo NFTA bus is raising fares and hiring dumb drivers.

Rode NFTA from the bike trail back to the yard...fare is 2.00 per bus no transfers. None of the drivers could tell me about what bus to connect too. only 25% of buses have bike racks and dispatch could not tell me which of there own buses have bike racks. NFTA board voted yesterday to raise fares. Extending the subway is not even on the radar screen. Reason being is that the NFTA board is not even from buffalo as they are all appointed by the Gov. without any local input. Rule 1 is dont plan any big projects that take any money from New York City. Buffalo despite having a milllion metro has no transit tax and all of its buses are hand me downs.----Transit service is going downhill in a number of places as its taking longer to find a bus and wait times are longer---There is no alternitive in the USA to a fossil fuel car and the insurance, gas prices, parking, traffic tickets, maintance that goes with it. I suppose we could have a bare bones commuter rail system that uses boxcars with space heaters:rolleyes: .

I can't recall whether or not I've ever put Peter Hoffman's website address on this site or not, but this is a really great website. The best part, for me, is the late 1950's photographs of trainhopping. I started hopping in 1970. Most of these photos were taken around 1958-1960, about around there, only ten years before I started.

The relaxed, laid-back attitude of both the trainhoppers and the railroad employees reminds me of my own early trainhopping days. Note the conventional appearance of the two guys hopping. This is pretty much the way it was. No tattoos, no pierced noses, no ragged-ass camouflage costumes--just regular, normal young men off on an adventure. There were alcohol-soaked, down-and-out bums out there too, but this is more the way I remember it.

CSX starting Direct Service from East Coast to Prince Rupert BC-

http://www.progressiverailroading.com/class_is/news/CN-CSXT-craft-steelwheel-interchange-in-Chicago--30475

In plain english CSX trains will go the CN(IC) yard in Hazelwood or the EJ&E yard and set off cars and head N to Canada and Prince Rupert stoping at Duluth-Superier via the WC route-Winnipeg or they could use the CN intermodal yard by Ohare set off cars and head North from there. I hear Prince Rupert is beutifull this time of year.

KaBar-

Conrail was a cool railroad to ride with a few exceptions of hot intermodal trains. There were still ol hippies working there up untill the take-over. What happened was that the Feds& ICC had a rule that CSX and NS could only own 10% of Conrail Stock. Sometime during the Clinton Era that changed and a all out war for control of Conrail commenced between CSX,NS and the Unions (who understandbly wanted CSX). Now the CSX side is cool while the NS side not so much.CSX treats its employees with respect and understanding and NS according to my contact Sam Nasca at UTU Albany is very militeristic. "Conrail was willing to let the employees do what they needed to do to get the job done while NS is very work to rule".

Fortune Top Places to(or was it Fortune) does not list any railroad http://www.bing.com/search?q=forbes+top+places+to+work&qs=SC&form=QBLH&pq=forbes+to+pla&sc=8-13&sp=3&sk=SC2

despite the higher then normal pay for blue collar work (Conducters Start at 27.00 a hour).

As hobos we should do everything in our power to help our union brothers out and we will get paid in kind in return.

GOT TICKETS to BNSF BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY ANNUAL MEETING!

I GUESS that makes me a BUFFETHEAD as in Warren Buffet....!

Now I see that there are a couple of diffrent routes to get to Omaha were the stockholders meeting is...

UP or ICE or Iowa Central or BN or CN(Chicago Central Route thru Dubuque?...most end up in Council Bluffs. Anyway I get to rub shoulders with the 1% which means I have to take a bath and find a shirt and tie

I OWN shares of Berkshire....Berkshire Hathaway A stock is 100,000 a share...but 2 years ago Warren Buffet made B shares which trade at 76.00 a share for the railroad side of the company.

I love BNSF and is my fav railroad out west to ride but those GEICO(Berkshire company) commercials are a annoying as hell..I want to tie up that little lizard on the next westbound...I used to like CSX(also have shares in my 401k )but they are getting bad...Intermodal trains have been tied up for as much as a hour on crew changes that should take 5 min. Theres no excuse for delaying a hot intermodal money train for crews. The van should be there with a fresh crew and not have to get another van to bring back the old crew to the roach motel

Been stairing at the same blank wall for a hour @ the Murry Hill Station of the LIRR....This station NEEDS Graffiti badly. Murruy Hill station is in a pit or a trouth and non rush hour all there is a blank white wall.

Only a few paint overs. The LIRR should get that Facebook Millionare down here and do some charity work. I know I know whats a hobo doing on the cushions..Long Isand does have the New York and Atlantic one train each way via trackage rights on the LIRR from Sunnyside to Greenport but I will be a old man trying to catch that...Perhaps when I get on the other end of this Island I will get it back or I will down about 5 Long Island Ice Teas and walk off a long peir....

10,000,000 people in the NYC Metro area and no one to talk to. In Chicago folks on METRA and in the hoods can engage in small chit chat and I can find that diamond in the rough were theres a rare intellegent conversation. Here its like the desert...Quiet too Queit.

Did get one converasation at the train station in Port Washington on the LIRR....still talking 9/11.

I am sorry but its time to move on and heal. This country has been throwing eggs for years with trying to bomb folks into submission into loving us. You have to expect that they will throw some rottten eggs back at us.

Yes Innocent People Died. But how innocent were the people in the WORLD TRADE CENTER?

They decided based on pure profit who would eat and who would starve by trading grain and food futures contracts back and forth among themselves not thinking what those consoquences were.

The traders in the World Trade Center would dump corn by the shipload on Central American Countrys that there local farmers produced corn so that they could not get a living wage and fair price for there corn and coffee....Thus forcing them to pick up guns and engage in the endless bannana republic wars down there.....The USA is going to be one of those Bannana Republics soon if we dont get our Debt under control. We need to feed our own people. There is no exuse why food is so expensive....4.50 for a quart of Milk here on LI or more....4.00 for a loaf of bread. 7.50 for a frozen cardboard pizza.

Heard from Stretch and Burlington the other day. They were stuck in Dallas. They missed Amory Railroad Festival. Stretch tried to make it by hitching, but couldn't do it. He was disappointed, but hey, that's life on the bum. It's hard to hit a precise date for a festival or gathering or whatever when you're on foot. You have to start way early and allow for all of life's little misadventures.

I am heading East on the Highline from Washington State in a couple of weeks.

I'll be using a scanner for the first time.

I know to get off in Havre for the 1000 mile checkpoint. Any other heads up between Spokane and Minneapolis?

spokane and havre are the only sketchy spots as far as im concerned. careful in havre they are pretty on top of shit there.

just rode from arkansas back to houston a couple days ago and miraculousy didnt get busted by the workers who saw us run across the road and tracks to get on during the day time. the train started pulling out and they stopped it to search for us but couldnt find us. we could hear them running up and down climbing on ladders and shit we were sweating bullets. pig in a bucket THANK YOU. i wasnt missing that train and spending another night getting mauled by mosquitos. NOPE.

I've always been well-treated by KCS workers. Back in the day, the Southern Pacific guys were real decent people too, but when they got absorbed by UP, things got tougher. Worst of all of them, I think, are the Norfolk Southern special agents. I will still ride NS trains, but I am extremely careful.
