  1. the water one annoys you? weird. i guess i can see that. it's funny because i posted it like an hour ago on flickr and it's hardly gotten any views while the one right below it which is a pretty generic graffiti photo already has like 50 haha. oh well. glad you like the other one though.
  2. 2 decent ones from today... checking to make sure the coast is clear.... abandoned warehouses plus graffiti plus puddles make good photos....
  3. i really really like that red doorway/brick photo. the wheelchair photo creeps me the fuck out, but in a good way. not really feeling that last one with the car driving down the street for some reason, but that's just me. what kind of camera, etc are you shooting with?
  4. cool thanks for the advice guys. i'm going out with a photo friend tomorrow night and i'll have to mess around with my f stops and see how they come out. anyway i shot photos of hour of the wolf last night. here are some good ones from that...
  5. waffle-usually 3.5-5.6 most of the time. it's really not a huge deal as what i wanna shoot is usually in focus, but the stuff on the edges is slightly out of focus. you can't really notice it unless you zoom way in on the picture. thanks for the info though. and ohmygosh i'm digging all those shots. i miss exploring in the woods and finding stuff like that.
  6. so i noticed while editing some photos today that some stuff in the corners of my photos are out of focus. generally i shoot most stuff in auto focus. anyone know what the problem would be that's causing this? i shoot with a d80 and a tamron 10-24 mm lens.
  7. so i'm starting to mess with long night exposures since it's getting dark so early these days. took this one earlier tonight and would like some feedback on it. i believe it was about a 10 minute exposure
  8. if you're talking about the photo i just posted it's not faded. it was sunny out and the sun washed out some of the white when i took the picture. when i edit the close up i'll post it hopefully it will look better and not so washed out.
  9. yeah if him locking up the bike was after the first shot it would def be better. i like the way it tells a story though keep up the good work!
  10. had a night shooting session with some friends last night. this was probably my favorite shot out of the bunch.
  11. ah ok i see what you're saying. i guess i don't take photos of getting in/out of buildings because i find out about a lot of spots via writers who ask me not to post too many details on flickr as they don't want the spots blown up. but next time i go out with some writers i'll be sure to take more photos like that you're right it def would make for more interesting shots.
  12. cool thanks for the advice guys. i actually do have a flash cord and def used it for that last photo of grace alley. like i said earlier i still need to work on my lighting and i def wanna improve on that in the upcoming year. mayor-i feel what you're saying. but are you saying to get more action shots of dudes painting, etc? i do have some action shots in my personal collection, but really try and refrain from putting that stuff online. i can see what you're talking about with bands though-maybe hanging out before/after they play, getting stuff set up etc. but yeah i'd def like to work on some of the stuff you suggested so like you said i'm less of a subject and more of an outsider taking photos like that.
  13. hey man thanks for the response. as far as exposures and lighting i still feel like i have a lot of room for improvement on those areas. shooting concerts can be hard because a lot of places are dark and the lighting isn't so great. i really need to take a class to learn better lighting techniques for sure. anyone have any suggestions? as far as shooting the whole show like getting there, setting up, crowd shots, etc it's a good idea for sure and something i'll consider doing for the future. as it is right now i'm 30 and i've been going to shows since i was 15 and it takes a lot for me to go out to a show these days and usually i'll go, shoot friends bands and leave as most shows happen on the weekends and i work early saturday and sunday mornings. def something i'd be willing to try in the future as it would make a cool project. thanks again for the advice and opinions, etc. -walter
  14. flicked this one the other day and hadn't seen it on here yet...
  15. alright well it's been a week and i guess i'm up now. these photos are gonna be pretty much based on things i like to shoot-graffiti, live music, and urban exploring. i'll include a little story with each picture and will probably even critique some of my own work. all these photos were taken with a nikon d80, a tamron 10-24mm lens and when using a flash i use the sb 600. this is my friends band skin like iron. i shot this about a month after i got my camera and didn't know about shooting manual yet. this was done in jpeg not raw in the black and white setting with no editing. i think it came out pretty good for not being messed with at all. this is an abandoned adult developmental center in new jersey. i like the fact that you can pretty much see the whole room, but don't like the fact that it's kinda lopsided-i didn't have a tripod with me. i took this photo for a book that trash talk was going to be putting out. my friend gloom is friends with them and he basically wanted to paint their logo all over this abandoned warehouse. i like it because their new record "eyes and nines" just came out and gloom is rocking the hoodie for it. this image also got used for a flyer for a show they did in japan which i thought was pretty awesome. rival schools at fun fun fun fest in austin 2008. i was lucky enough to get a photo pass for the fest and got to shoot some awesome bands. walter schreifels is one of my favorite musicians and i'm glad i got the chance to shoot rival schools. my friend klue painting a freight. i like it because you can see how big a freight looks compared to a person. i don't like it because i had to crop it weird because i didn't want the bags we had out in the picture. in hindsight i should have just moved the bags. third and jurne. it's a basic picture, but i like the way the graffiti reflects in the water. a graffitied cal tran tunnel in san francisco an abandoned commuter train at a train graveyard. the light at the end of the tunnel this was in an burned out apartment building in oakland. it kinda creeped me out a bit as in my sick head i could picture someone who had been murdered or committed suicide in the bathtub. walking through a train yard with my friend aaron who i shoot photos with a lot i'm really interested in street photography, but i'm usually too chicken to ask a stranger if i can take a photo of them. this is a homeless man named gino who lives by the cal tran tracks in san francisco. i was taking pictures of graffiti one day and he asked me what i was taking pictures of and asked if he could watch me. i said sure and he followed me around and kept telling me what a great photographer i was and asked me to take his picture as well. danny diablo DJing at a bar in berkeley. i like this picture because i didn't mean to take it and it came out good. punk is dead. my friends band grace alley playing at gilman. this is my current favorite photo that i've taken recently. so that's it. i look forward to hearing everyone's comments, feedback, suggestions, etc. thank you all for letting me a part of this!
  16. has anyone on here ever tried this.... http://gizmodo.com/5674647/shooting-challenge-freelensing i was trying to figure out how to do it with no much luck so far. i'll def have to mess with it some more.
  17. i also hope to still be shooting in 5-10 years. i feel like i've come along way in photography. i remember being in high school and i got into punk and hardcore and started to borrow my mom's point and shoot camera and i had no idea how to use it what film speeds and all that stuff meant. i shot from the back of the room mostly until i learned you obviously get better pics standing up closer to the bands. i moved to the bay area when i was 21 and needed a job and just basically applied at anything that had a help wanted sign in the window. i wound up getting a job at wolf camera where i bought my first slr and shot shows like crazy because i could get free film and developing. i was getting some pictures in bands records and zines which i was pretty stoked about. i quit that job to go on tour with a friends band for the summer and didn't really take pictures for about 4 years and then decided to pick up a digital slr. i've been shooting digitally for about 2 years now and when i started i still didn't know much about apeture white balancing editing shooting in raw etc, but i've learned so much from friends i shoot with and this thread. some of my graffiti pictures have been used on blogs and in magazines which is awesome. while i'm not really into photography in hopes of becoming a professional i really like that my work is being used by people that think it's good enough to be used in their magazines or on their blogs. anyway i guess what i'm trying to say is i really hope i keep improving in my skills in the next 5-10 years and i hope a lot of us are still posting on this forum. it looks like it's my turn tomorrow to post in the portfolio thread which i'm looking forward to. ok i'll end this long ass rant now. haha.
  18. i also like the photo of the old signage. also the 2 brown bags next to each other is pretty awesome. did you happen to get any pictures of the actual fire or just the firefighters? also maybe in this thread can we post what kind of cameras were used? digital, film, etc? i'd be curious to see what everyone else uses.
  19. yeah great pics indeed must be quite an interesting place to live for sure. do you ask everyone you shoot if it's ok to take their picture? i would love to do more street photography like that, but i'm terrible about approaching strangers.
  20. looking forward to posting in the portfolio thread i'm excited and nervous about what i'm gonna post. looking forward to looking at everyone elses work as well.
