Battery Revival:

The batteries on laptops are often a problem. Most people sit their laptop on a desk and use AC power, so the battery usually suffers, resulting in a chemical ‘memory’, which gives them a life of about 3 seconds under load. The batteries in my donor laptops were both made in 2000, so I had to try and revive them. If you have any NiCd or NiMH batteries that won’t hold their charge, you can often revive them. This is not a new concept, but here is my recipe for reviving rechargeable batteries:

1. Discharge the battery as much as you can.

2. Place in a sealed plastic bag.

3. Place the bag in your freezer for at least 24hours. Overnight is sometimes enough, but I leave it about a week.

4. Take the bag out of the freezer and leave the battery to return to room temperature. Make sure you wipe off any condensation from the battery contacts before you use it. I just leave them in the sun for a few hours.

5. Fully charge the battery, then run it down again, as low as you can get it. Repeat this charge-discharge cycle a few times, and see if you get a longer life.

Your mileage will vary, but two of my 5-year-old batteries are now useful. I get between 2 and 4 hours from one of them, depending on the load on my laptop. You can do this with cellphone batteries, or batteries from lots of other gear.

Hey...

It's been a while and I am sure that a lot has changed since I've been gone, but I'll cut to the chase-

I'm trying to hook up a friend's comp (XP pro) and I need to get some free apps to clean house on it.....I tried Avast out but it's hung up on the IE temp files and I don't have a whole lot of time to get the job done.

Mostly I need a registry cleaner, a firewall, and a spyware/adware blocker.....sorry I fell off for a while there, but that's the way it goes, I guess.....hopefully, I will be back online soon and will have more time to explain what went wrong.

Thanks a bunch if you can help me out.......

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less that a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware! :)

when installing besure to unmark install yahoo toolbar they put it in there because it is a free product and they need money

also when running this program do not check-mark

Advanced

Hotfix Unistallers

Custom Files annd Folders

the issues Tab on the program is a regisry cleaner

its a basic one and works just fine run this program daily

it will keep your system from adding up information about you and having spyware programs use them

Cool...I've been better, but you know.

This comp is running a lot smoother now, I'm defragging the HD so we'll see how that goes.

Well, thanks again. Tell Casek I said what's up. I'll try to check in more often, shit's been off the chain lately.

Mainter, a while back you mentioned ccleaner, but there was some .ini file I had to leave alone in the registry...what was that? Boot.ini?
