Graffiti costs teen train surfer $6300

1st November 2007, 16:45 WST

A teenage graffiti vandal who caused thousands of dollars damage in a ninemonth tagging spree in which he endangered the lives of passengers by “train surfing” between stations has learnt his lesson, his stricken mother said yesterday.

The boy, who cannot be identified because he was under 18 at the time of the offences, faced Perth Children’s Court for sentencing yesterday after pleading guilty to a string of vandalism and trespass offences committed between October 2006 and July.

His offences included graffiti damage to trains, a railway tunnel and various items of train station property at Whitfords, East Perth, City West, West Leederville, Subiaco and Cannington train stations.

One criminal damage charge involved more than $8500 damage.

State prosecutor Katie White told the court in one case, the teen climbed on top of a train and used shoe polish to write the tag “moo” several times while train surfing from West Leederville to City West stations. The train was stopped midroute and had to be taken out of service and cleaned.

The boy was accompanied by a group of friends for several of the offences. His accomplices also took photographs and home videos of some incidents.

Defence lawyer Claire Rossi said her client, who was struggling to cope with the loss of a school friend at the time, accepted his acts were “very dangerous and stupid” and he was deeply remorseful.

He committed the offences while he was a member of a peer group “in which you gain status by tagging”.

“If you are tagging a moving train while hanging off the back of it, that’s particularly dangerous and scary . . . so your status moves up,” Ms Rossi said. “(The boy) has come to the realisation now that this was futile behaviour . . . He realises now how much damage he could have caused to himself and (others).”

Ms Rossi said he would struggle to pay back a big damage bill because he was working as an apprentice plumber and was already paying $50 a week off a fine for a separate offence.

But Magistrate Tim Schwass ordered the teen to pay his $4949.25 share of the damage bill to Transperth plus a $100 fine for each of his 13 charges.

There's a photo at the link below. How can they not realise that this just makes home boy sound rad as fuck. Big props to the kid.

Edit:

Thought I should post a flick so here's something I found posted on a fishing forum. Thought it was pretty funny. Apparently it's in the middle of nowhere and the guy couldn't understand why anybody would "tag" there.
