Guest sneak Posted June 24, 2004 Share Posted June 24, 2004 Mero talks the most sense here. simply, the war and everything else simply has no daily effect on many americans lives. im not saying it doesnt register, but how many yanks wake up to bombs dropping, soldiers arresting them etc? because it doesnt affect where thier next meal is coming from (or in mero's case - how clean his toilet is) many americans will probably stand by and let it go on. remember, Bush probably has done other stuff inhis time rather than wage war on other countries/ He may have tried to improve your healthcare, or education, or curb unemployment levels. What im saying here is that there are things which do matter to your average american - such as whether he is likely to have a job in the next few weeks, what would happen if he hurts himself, or how well his kids are being educated. If Bush has made things happen for some groups of your population then they are likely to vote for him again despite what he's doing internationally, but because he could be improving everyday life at home. sneaks/ not sure if that came out like it did in my head. They may have opposing views on who the bad guy is but it seems like they are all following the same shepherd. I agree with what 26SidedCube said. Like this forum the world is painted with shades of gray. I find it hard trying to distinguish whats right from wrong or who the good guys are but its pretty easy to just point a finger. It continues to evolve as we live it. America abused a lot of people and stepped on a lot of toes all over the world to get where it is today. This doesnt mean the american people are corrupt or negative, but it does mean the rest of the world sees it that way. America used to be 'home of the free' but Bush has changed that. Before you people from other lands would dream of coming to america to get rich and have a safe and secure life for their family. Well now Bush has made it so that 'freedom' is less important and everyone knows that the rich get richer while the poor go deeper into debt. the reason why people are mad at america right now is because the current administration has taken away the 'american dream'. Now people all over the world are seing that the reasons to come to america are not as true as they once were. They see america going to war to make oil money for some rich white men at the expense of the working classes children. And as far as the 'freedom' thing.... you honestly think there are a lot of Arabs who think life would be safer and better in the US? Loss of the "american dream" as you put it. You'll have to forgive me because I'm not as brushed up on my american history as I once was. But I think its fair to say that the "american dream" in the sense your talking about it was just a measure taken during the countries 'populate or perish' stage. Its just the glorification of immigration that needed to happen for the country to somewhat stay on its feet. Or mabye im confused. I gave up on emphasising history a fair while ago so if wrong please tell me. Aside from that I was talking about the american dream on a more societal basis... people who immigrated to america were not excepted with open arms as that whole statue of liberty myth would have one believe and as I said above it was not something done out of humanitarian concerns but self intrest. All of that land of the free home of the brave stuff is just shit that is there to try and unify the nation state. Its all very 1984 if you ask me.. Okay, I just tried reading it ... but, for some odd reason, I'm not going to go beyond this paragraph: To describe this film as dishonest and demagogic would almost be to promote those terms to the level of respectability. To describe this film as a piece of crap would be to run the risk of a discourse that would never again rise above the excremental. To describe it as an exercise in facile crowd-pleasing would be too obvious. Fahrenheit 9/11 is a sinister exercise in moral frivolity, crudely disguised as an exercise in seriousness. It is also a spectacle of abject political cowardice masking itself as a demonstration of "dissenting" bravery.
