Seven stores in Santa Rosa's Montgomery Village shopping center opened for business as usual Friday morning, following a late-night spray-painting incident in which two young men were apprehended.

Arrested on suspicion of eight counts of felony vandalism were Kirk B. Herst, 19, and Joseph M. Wyman, 18, both of Santa Rosa.

The men drew the attention of Police Officer Ryan Hepp as he was patrolling the shopping center shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday. Hepp reported the two men attempted to evade detection, then entered a vehicle and drove "recklessly" from the center.

Hepp stopped the vehicle and observed evidence that suggested the two had been engaged in vandalism. More officers arrived and discovered several businesses had been vandalized.

Lisa Kidd, the center's property manager, said the vandals had sprayed paint on windows, doors and even murals located within the center.

The premises were all cleaned up by the time stores opened for business Friday morning. "Everything was fine," Kidd said.

Police and Kidd identified seven affected businesses: Abode, Sincerely Yours, Sea Thai Bistro, Urban Garden, Sonoma County Bath Works, Dano's Liquors and Michelle Marie's Patisserie.

Kidd said the graffiti was "mumbo-jumbo" and did not seem to be aimed at any of the businesses.

"I think it was just a random act," she said, crediting police for their work in apprehending the suspects.

Vicki Gentry, a clerk at Abode, a home furnishing store, said the graffiti was gone by the time customers arrived. "They (the culprits) didn't get much satisfaction out of it. No one saw it," she said.

Herst also was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Both men remained in custody Friday morning. Bail for each was set at $5,000.

Staff Writers Robert Digitale and Guy Kovner contributed to this report.
