KASTsystem
Richard Serra...I don't know if he's in my top 5 (maybe) but he definitely makes my top 10 list. Big, heavy, dangerous metal sculptures. Dr. Dazzle
That "bellamy" is bad ass. How does he shape them like that?

KASTsystem
Here's a sculpture of mine that is admittedly heavily influenced by the work of Richard Serra. Stacked Steel Rings http://www.kastsystem.com/jpegs/mike_005a.jpg'> I rolled the rings, then stacked them from the shelf that I built to the ceiling...the only thing that keeps them from falling is that they make a tight fit between the shelf and the ceiling. Guest imported_Tesseract
Richard Serra is one of my favs to, However i cant think of his work as something important in a different scale than his. Technical parts and size are the elements of his work for me.

I'm just saying there was an influence. Actually, my sculpture is more about the space inside the rings (too bad i don't have a pic of it on hand right now)...you gotta get your face up close to the wall and peek in to the space. anyway, i probably shouldn't have posted my pic, cause i really wanted this thread to be about Serra. Guest imported_Tesseract
Kast, no man, no. This isnt critisism to you, really. Its just something i think about Serra quite often. His whole body of work is depended on size, weight and media. I like your sculpture and by the way i''ll have to tell you that it reminds me of Tony Gragg's work more than Serras
KASTsystem
I don't know Tony Cragg's work, but I'll look him up. If you have any info or links on him, that would be cool too.
yoshy
so kinda funny story about serra and gagosian gallery... when serra had his show maybe 5 years ago or so, he had another big piece like " bellamy". when the piece arrived and was installed in the gallery, they found a tag on one of the pieces of steel. they had to trumploy (sp?) it so the petina would match. 5 years later, new show shows up from the same mill and docks and there is the same tag on a piece of steel, "john was here" or something like that! when i heard that, i laughed, someone in the mill or at the docks must kinda have it out for serra! so then the gallery called in the guy to paint it again and there were some bigwigs there watching and one of the older women there asked the guy what he was doing and he explained the whole story. she thought it was really neat, so she grabbed a grease pencil from the cart and busted her name right on the serra piece infront of everyone. the painter was speechless...he was just like "waht the fuuuu......" heehee:crazy:

teister
I thought I recognized that name. I've seen his stuff before somewhere, I just can't remember. He's not my favorite, not really even close. I'm not so into sculpture though. Anyways, its cool to hear people having real discussion on here about art and not just bitches and getting fucked up. Thanks.
