if you know how to make detailed characters please post your ways. im talking about the ones that take many layers of paint and look very life like. My main question is do you guys work from photographs of people and then imitate the shadows colors and stuff?

if you are talking about freehand with spraypaint, can control is important. but if you cant sort out dimensions and anatomy you wont be able to get it looking right. read books on anatomy for arists and practice drawing people first.
i would say that most people who paint figures or portraits would work from photos.
