Ode To The Igloo

By: Dave Crawley

Rumbling bulldozers made a new home

For hockey in Pittsburgh. A towering dome.

But the Civic Arena first thundered with cheers

For the Hornets, who ruled the first half dozen years.

Then at last, '67. The Penguins moved in.

Fans hoped they would christen this place with a win

But the Civic Arena's first Pens game of all

Was a two-to-one loss. Guess who? Montreal.

Andy Bathgate gets props for the first Penguins goal,

But the Igloo in those days was hockey's black hole.

Though fans remained true to the team of their choosing,

Our great flightless birds just kept right on losing.

'83-'84 put fans to the test,

Though the very worst was one of their best.

By finishing last as other teams laughed

They got the first choice in the NHL draft.

Decision? No brainer. A guy named Lemieux.

In years yet to come, the captain came through

With two Stanley Cups. A retirement. Then...

December, 2000, he came back again.

Today, there's no shortage of goal scoring greats.

A new generation of legends on skates.

But this year the story has ended too soon.

For the Igloo, the moment approaches high noon.

One fan says she'll miss this dome of renown:

"I don't like it when history's taken down."

Said another, this moment is hard to endure.

"It'll be a sad moment that's for sure."

The final farewell is in fact bittersweet.

The Pens are just moving across the street.

They'll ring out the old, and ring in the new,

At the Consol Energy House of Lemieux.

So wipe off that tear. There's reason to cheer.

New home. New season. We'll get 'em next year
