I would if I could. The last standing problem with this laptop is its way too frequent freeze ups. I HAVE to have it vertical or the shit seems like it overheats and screeches to a halt. That, and the occasional write errors but I sure they are connected. I also just tried to make a partition to throw linux on but partitionmagic said there was a bad sector on the HD. Is there any way to salvage this one, or should i buy a new HDD?

you should probably buy a new hard drive.

one thing you can do is boot with your xp cd or a bootable floppy

and run scandisk.

like this at command prompt (but not command prompt from windows. not the same)

c:\ scandisk c:

then hit enter

Casek, what do you know about packet analysis on torrents and/or video streams?

I'm mostly concerned about how the ISP knows what it knows and what I can do to counteract it.

Apparently PG has been ported to OS X, so that's a plus.

I've been noticing some lags in the cable DSL here. It's going into a Surfboard, then an Airport Base Station.

If I could get a Linux box going, I'd just use Wireshark. But, that's not an option.

wireshark is also windows compatible.

ISP's use Sandvine to throttle bt traffic. only way around it is to VPN or encrypt via azureus, utorrent, etc.

peerguardian is good to have on hand too.

keeps the bad guys out.

Thanks. PG is going on here tomorrow. I'm still on a Mac, though. So, encryption....I don't know if I can do that with Tomato. I need to get another x86 laptop, or fix the one I've got.

I stand corrected. Wireshark has been ported to BSD, so maybe I'll try to compile it tomorrow. I'm going to look into Sandvine...I've heard of network chokes, but I never looked into it.

I'm fucking tired. Someone came by and blazed a bunch of tweed during the Simpsons, and I don't even smoke the stuff. I feel about 25% dumber right now. Caffeine isn't working.

Get on AIM someday. It would be nice to catch up.

Windows At the risk of making my Windows readers feel like second-class citizens, please follow the first four steps outlined in the instructions for Mac users. Once you’ve done that:

1. Double-click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop.

2. Locate your iPod in the window that appears and select it.

3. Choose Folder Options from the Tools menu in the My Computer window.

4. Click the View tab in the Folder Options window that appears.

5. Look for the Hidden Files and Folders entry. Below this entry enable the Show Hidden Files and Folders option and click Apply to reveal the hidden files.

6. Dismiss the Folder Options windows by clicking the OK button.

7. Double-click the iPod’s icon in the My Computer window.

8. Sorry about the return to second-class citizen status, but please follow steps 8 through 10 in the Macintosh instructions above.

9. Once the Music folder is on the Desktop, right-click on the folder, select Properties from the contextual menu, uncheck the Hidden option in the Attributes area of the General tab, and click Apply. In the Confirm Attributes Change window that appears make sure the Apply Changes to This Folder, Subfolders, and Files option is checked and click OK.

The folder and all the items in it are now visible and can be dragged into the iTunes library.

Note that although the music files bear a seemingly incomprehensible four-letter title (AHLK.m4a, for example) when viewed outside of iTunes, their titles will appear properly once you’ve brought them into iTunes.

Casek, what about this?

http://redhatcat.blogspot.com/2007/09/beating-sandvine-on-windows-with-wipfw.html

It looks like a way to get around the throttle by denying Sandvine's RST flags on the Bittorrent port. I guess the RST flags tell the other seeds/peers on the tracker that I have disconnected and to discontinue all traffic to my client. That's fucking SHADY, if not illegal.

Since this is a BSD system, IPFW is built in. I just need to figure out the UNIX commands to make this happen in OS X.

It's probably not hard, just time consuming.

Fuck Comcast. Apparently they're about to get slapped with a class-action suit over this.

little old but good post

I just noticed it was from May. Touche.

The point is, Comcast is getting away with this only because people aren't aware of Sandvine.

I'm sure a lot of folks on here are A)using BT, B)are on Comcast, and C)going nuts trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

Well, now everybody who reads this thread knows. And, it sucks.

Apparently, Comcast doesn't care if people know about this, either. Their attitude seems to be, "If you don't like it, find another ISP to use."

But, if they don't care, then why aren't they talking about how they're analyizng my traffic? Probably because they know people like me who care will jump ship.

SUPER SHADY.
