By: Binoo Nair January 7, 2004 An unknown fringe group called Mumbai Resistance (http://www.mumbairesistance.org/) is suspected to have painted graffiti bearing communist slogans on a suburban train while it was parked in a Western Railway (WR) yard. The incident came to light yesterday morning. WR authorities are trying to find out how this was accomplished when the yards are heavily guarded by carbine-toting Railway Protection Force personnel. The graffiti, in English and in letters half a metre in size, comprised exhortations to people to rise up against what it called class tyranny, and other such communist literature. “It must have been written while the train was parked at some yard and it is a clear case of negligence on the part of some people. We are trying to find out the details,” said Shailendra Kumar, chief public relations officer, WR. According to Kumar, the train would be given a fresh coat of paint. Senior divisional security commissioner, WR, and Mumbai RPF commandant Vinod Dhaka has been asked to investigate the matter, Kumar said. A volunteer of Mumbai Resistance, who identified himself as Abdul, said, “Some over-zealous volunteers might have done it. They were asked to paint some walls in south Mumbai to inform about a meeting on January 17 in Goregaon. This must have been done late at night.” Incidentally, Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety R Rajamani had made a surprise visit on Monday to WR yards and workshops to check if anything was amiss. Ever since the recent bomb blasts in trains, taxis and buses in the city, security had been stepped up at the yards and washing lines. WR sources said parking of trains posed a big problem as the WR has 75 trains now and there is not enough space for parking them in the car sheds and workshops. Where the trains are parked at night • Churchgate: 7 trains (four platforms and three in the stabling lines) • Mumbai Central: 8 in stabling lines • Bandra: 7 in stabling lines • Andheri: 13 in stabling lines • Kandivli: 11 in EMU car shed • Borivali: 11 in stabling lines • Virar: 7 in stabling lines • 11 reserve trains are kept at various other stations (Stabling lines are tracks close to stations, meant solely for parking trains once their trips for the day are completed) Security at yards The yards are situated at the end of major stations like Churchgate, Mumbai Central, Bandra, Andheri, Kandivli, Borivali and Virar. They are guarded round-the-clock with two carbine-toting Railway Protection Force personnel allotted to each of the 75 trains owned by WR. Who are these defacers? Mumbai Resistance, 2004 (MR2004) is a front for 286 all-India and international people’s organisations which is to hold a four-day programme in Mumbai from January 17 to 20. Its agenda is to protest against imperialist globalisation and war. All over the country, MR 2004 is carrying out a propaganda campaign, which is supposed to lead up to this programme. The MR2004 was conceived at the International Camp, Thessaloniki Resistance 2003 that was held at Greece in June 2003. It took a more concrete form following a decision of the International Co-ordinating Group of the International League of Peoples’ Struggles (ILPS), which is a coalition of over 100 struggling people’s organisations from different parts of the world.
