I didn't read the original thread and I wasn't going to jump to conclusions, that's why I clearly stated the first hand knowledge piece above, which apparently you did not have in this situation so I don't see any reason in my mind why you should hold yourself accountable. Therefore I do not think you are a piece of shit for not hemming the guy up.
