@One Man Banned - the best advice I've seen is posted around state parks here. Don't run, back away slowly and don't make eye contact. Who the hell knows if that actually helps.

Since I moved to CO last year I've been hiking a lot and always wondered what I'd do if I came upon a bear or mountain lion being that I currently don't carry anything that would help besides a pocket knife.
