  1. Nobodies riding a fixie to make travel practical? I disagree.

They're lower maintanance than any other bike, they're more of a theft deterrant provided the thief doesn't have a van he's going to throw the bike into and has no experience riding track bikes, they're less effort than a geared bike (in my experience; I come home way more tired when I use a gear bike and run a high gear most of the time, despite being able to coast), better for climbing hills then a single speed, and more traction in wet weather / snow. On top of that they're more fun. This is talking fixed gears in general by the way, not a track setup with super deep-drops, extremely low stem, etc.

But yeah, disc wheels may not run so great on the streets I guess. I don't really see any point to rock them outside of a track, whether it be for aesthetics or function.

FUCK, I want some god damn Thai food...

  2. yo i got me some baggy ass fubu's nahwhatimsayin some mofuckin tight ass two toned caps wordisbornawhatimean some tight ass stunna shadezzzzz yaddimean some gangsta ass chains n shit a fatty ass low rider bike cuz thugs ride those fuckinnnnn hella doo doo dumb shit.... im hella hard n shit right nahwahatimsayin straight from the streets raised in the gutters, typin all this out at the library, shits real.

  3. as opposed to grown ass men chained to car payments and driving something that is a complete pain in the ass to park in the city?

    +100

i think i'd rather have a bike then a bus pass too, more fun and faster. that's why i quit buyin em, only fun part of buses is scribing on the windows and seats and even that grows old.

  4. Haha yeah I'll have to agree with that last point KOH, riding brakeless is one thing but brakeless without clips and straps is putting your life in your hands... you can still skid stop without clips, but it's those long, drawn out ones that don't help you at all, not the ass in saddle skid. Just asking for trouble...

  5. bike unity is gay. count me out.

graff unity is gay. count me out

i only care about my team. no one else.

    fuck alleycat races

    fuck freight trains

fuck everything really (except lil wayne, campagnolo, cocaine, beer, and weed)

well if thats the stance ya wanna take, atleast i get where your coming from.

  6. if i wasn't looking twice i would swear some of you guys are neocons out on some weird power trip.

i ordered some 75's. pry them from my cold dead hands. on one hand you have to have campy hubs and italian frames, on the other hand they should never touch anything that's not a velodrome? fuck this shit. i'll ride because it's fun and save the pretension for those who really care get uptight about equipment like it's some grave political issue that will change life as we know it. if my bike looks nice, so be it, because if you can't willingly say you'd operate the ugliest bike possible (that operates on function alone, by the way) and then call out riding track bikes anywhere besides the track as some kind of fashion show, that almost sounds like being on the tinge of hypocrisy.

but you know what. i respect hesh, i respect king of hell, i respect joker for being as level headed and clear minded as he is... id unno where the fuck seeking is but he's cool too. ride what you like, i'll ride what i like, and we won't get into silly arguments about this bullshit and instead maybe have eachothers backs because that's the point of having a shared interest, when someone you've never met is hit by a car or gets their bike stolen, you have their back.

  7. Sucks for the stem measurement. I wish more things were universally measured and regarded in biking, atleast have like a universal measure for components on a road bike, components on a mountain bike, etc..... but then the second someone brings in an old beater French frame into the shop to get repaired, the whole equation is largely skewed.

Shifting the discussion a bit elsewhere, does anyone have anything to say about bike locks? Your favorite, what you roll with, what's best, etc? I'm rolling with a Krypto Mini Evo right now on my beater Raleigh so it's not too much of a concern currently, but thinking about getting an NYF U Lock or chain when the new bike is built up, and selling the Mini Evo, or using 2 locks on those risky 5 hour lock ups in Chinatown.

  8. Joker, I'm really not arguing that Sugino could be better than Campy. I'm just saying in the price range I'm looking at, it's a better crank than Miche Primatos and Stronglight's track crank, for whatever that's worth. Believe it or not, people seem to be happy with it.

As far as NJS, things that are approved must meet similar standards in quality, so if something meets the NJS standard you know there's a certain bar of worksmanship that has to make in order to get that certification. You're really not going to find any low quality parts as far as that goes, but you will run into some parts that, if you're planning to ride on the streets, are not really ideal (unsealed bottom brackets, unsealed hubs, unsealed whatever, less than ideal saddles, tires that don't meet your needs, etc.) and there are better options out there (Phil Wood, Formula, Continental, etc.) for whatever pricing range you're looking at. I'm not trying to build up a NJS approved machine because I know I'm not going to race track in Japan, but I would like to keep atleast a bit of a Japanese motif in my bike just like someone with a Cinelli probably would like to keep an Italian motif going, or someone with vintage Chicago taste would like to keep a Schwinn motif. Call it what you want, it's just the way of the world I guess. I'd love to build up a vintage De Rosa with Campy C-Record gruppo but it's not happening for me.

P.S. Picture of my new frame waiting to be built up (with a scant differences because I didn't take this picture, but found a frame that looks pretty much same as mine...)

  9. im thinking about gettin a big ass bottle of meeth blue from one of my science classes. but how much meth blue must i add into my ink recipie?

also does meth blue cope well with dot3 brake fluid??

After you see how meth blue stains, you won't even need DOT3. You want to mix in enough before it starts sacrificing the consistency of the ink, i.e. it starts getting too thick for good flow. So this is variable depending on how much ink you have (small jar of pilot vs. large container of marsh for instance) and have much MB you have.

  10. Haha, freewheel sells em for 150 but are sold out of 165's and black. Is sugino the only crank NJS aproved? What are your options?

Oh and I ended up buying a whole new barrel adjuster for $3. Problem solved. Century tomorrow.

Dura Ace is also NJS but not trying to go that route, it's more spendy than I want to go. I've got my eye on the 75's because I've heard some good things about them in comparison to similar priced cranks (Miche, Stronglights) and I'm not trying to break the bank on some Campy Records (sorry Joker, we all know Campy is the height of bicycle precision and craftmanship but fuck, it's so damned spendy).

170 is the length I'm going for in silver.

  11. After visiting SF for the first time in a while I've come to realize that custom bike building is on another level in the city. Where elsewhere in the bay you've got kids putting bullhorns on a Rush Hour and being 'hella radical', in the city every single kid's got a bullhorn handlebar somewhere in their bike repituar, and whether they use it is a matter of personal discretion. If you want to be different, it'll take Vanilla or something imported from France because all that Official NJS and other gear that's so sought after is entirely too accessible and on clearance in bulk. You can get an idea in your head of what kind of dream bike you'd like to build and source all the parts in stock from bike shops in walking distance from one another, down to gold plated chain ring nuts.

If you talk to SF shop owners of such stores as Freewheel, you learn they're still in awe and confused by orgins of such trends as people building NJS Keirin bikes to ride around the city with. We're talking about a fixie scene population in the thousands, all needing a little bike pornography in their life. That's not to say fixed gears are the end all of strange bike consumerism. Another popular trend is weekend warriors out to buy bikes with geometry specs suited for climbing hills in Marin County, Giant TCR's are a popular one along with fully carbon LOOK frames with short geometry and a long top tube supposedly making for perfect climbing conditions, or Santa Cruz bikes specifically to be used for downhilling.

    1) Vanilla is hands down the most beautiful bikes I've ever seen but with a 22 month wait and like 2g's minimun to drop on them... Jesus. Not my budget.

    2) French imported bikes have funny exclusive French only threading that no one else uses a lot of the time when they're vintage, don't they?

    3) Is it just me or does everyone in SF have Deep V's? I'm sure others would agree that they're fucking excessive when really you don't need that strength in a rim unless you're pushing 230 pounds and love hopping curbs, they're heavy as fuck and in my mind, almost purely for aesthetics, make your bike look like instant crack rock gift certificates to homeless people, etc. I'd rather go with some Fusions or Aeroheads if Velocity, or some Mavics. But who am I to talk, I like the color schemes of matching your rims to the rest of your bike (GASP!!!!!!!!!!!!!), but if it's going to come at way extra weight and zero real practicality, give me something else... Then again, the nice thing about bikes is everything is so cheap in comparison to cars that if you want something, you can fund it with a minimum wage job and some decent hours realistically, as opposed to your car where a few upgrades are going to break the bank.

    4) I think NJS approved shit is probably seen as the height of track bike / equipment hierarchy, with obscure Italian frames and Campy shit coming in a close second. Oh well, you know it's going to be quality atleast. With that said I don't think it's fully a trend everyone is into in Portland like it is in the Bay. Fuck it, I'd rather run an NJS Bridgestone then a KHS or Soma Rush or a Pake, especially when I just picked that exact frame (the Bridgestone) for even cheaper than it would cost for a Pake frame, fork and headset. So yeah, fuck buying some new generic 4130 CrMo shit when I could get something superior for cheaper! I will build up my machine of fun and ride it with more soul and passion than Rick James off a cocaine high.

So the moral of the story is keep the pretension at home, ride like you mean it and leave the cars for the suburbanites because living in the city and being able to get anywhere on a bike in 20 minutes minus car insurance and gas money is the real way to go.

PS Hesh will for sure puke at my post!

  12. aight son...

rubbish heap's work in progress bike build:

-bridgestone keirin njs frame 53cm: bought

    -sugino 75 track crank + shimano un53 107mm bottom bracket: $200

-velocity machined aeruhead rims, red (hopefully), w/ formula track hubs: $230 shipped

-my current tires that refuse to get stripped to the threads: free.

-my current no-name chain / unknown cog: free.

-nitto pro njs stem + b123 handlebars: i'll let the tip money from the job handle this one.

-current brooks saddle + seat post + pedals + clips / straps.

this is going to take multiple paychecks and many hours on the job to save for, hopefully it's worth the wait and time.

yay for building your own bike.

rubbish heaps / always boostin seeks closer, never comin up original.

  13. higher quality rims / rid brakeless.

paid for a bridgestone track frame today, it's coming in the mail. no silly entry level american track frames, but i probably paid about the same as it would cost for a pake + fork.

pictures soon pending hesh and seeking approve. haha.

what can you tell me about sugino 75 cranks for general road riding / commuting? worth the extra money over RD's for stiffness, or inconsequential difference?

  14. Hey man I've got all the professional cycling gear I never wanted, but the only time you'll catch me sportin it is on some secluded mountain road where the only people who see me wearin that shit are my professional buddies who are far too proud of their spandex to be my friends, and other cyclists. It's not exactly summer so you can get places in a pair of jeans and a tee without much recoil. My round-town shit usually spans across six to eight different cities too. School alone is 30 miles away through five of em. Oh my dude I'm all about going distance. It's all about training for that big race that only exists in your dome. It's called me taking advantage of all the fresh air living in san francisco robbed me of.

I've also got a pair of conti gatorskin ultras which have been the dopest pair of tires I've ever used. Tough as nails, comfortable over uneven roads, enough grip for turns and whatnot. What are you guys using?

I got some gatorskins on backup.

I could probably use a new drivetrain. Methinks investing in a fancy frame/BB/fork first will keep me more sane, though. NJS approved shit yes?

The fork on that "Schwinn" is butt ugly.. and it's welded not lugged? I'll stay away, thank you.

Maybe me and whoisseuth have way different tastes, but yuck. Sorry.
