  1. is Gaim a good program? i've never heard of it before.
  2. if you have a DVD burner, burn the .mdf file onto a DVD... that's what i did with CD image .mdf files... i never knew you could 'use' one without burning it... i thought it was alcohol's own file extension for image files.... or something...
  3. i wish strippers let you grab their funbags.
  4. yeah i remember hearing about people doing that randomly at clubs or attaching needles to the pump handles at gas stations. that shit always scared the hell out of me too.
  5. you know... i never realized just how much of a strain Peerguardian put on my computer until i opened Task Manager and viewed the processes running and saw that Peerguardian was using 43% of my CPU (this was while i was downloading stuff with Soulseek, so it was constantly checking its list to see if the IPs were acceptable or not) i don't know about the new Peerguardian you're talking about... but i opted for Protowall and found that it's a lot better in my opinion. it's a pain in the ass to install, because you need to manually install a driver for it, and you need to install Blocklist Manager in order to get the block lists for Protowall to use... but from what i can tell so far it's worth it. it already blocked a few packets from leaving my computer that were sent out by some spyware that i didn't know i had (Spy Sweeper/Spybot hadn't found it). and it uses virtually none of the CPU because it's assimilated with a windows driver that deals with all incoming/outgoing data. i would definitely recommend it, but i'm gonna check out Peerguardian Lite as well... *edit... you can get it here
  6. i'd say to delete the registry keys they have that make them start when windows does. then when you reboot, they won't start up, and you can delete the files. that's what i did with a program that i couldn't delete because it was in use.
  7. does anyone know if i can copy a cookie from the computer at work and put in into my computer at home? the thing is, my work computer automatically logs me into 12oz, but i forgot my password, and my home computer doesn't have the cookie. when i try having the site send me my password, it never arrives. if i copy the cookie from my work computer to my home computer, will it work?
  8. for the second time in one week i had to reinstall windows last night. sometimes i really hate technology. it's all because of Panda Titanium Antivirus. it virtually punched my computer in the nuts several dozen times and then proceeded to smash its head in with a golf club, rendering it completely useless. albeit i did download it from suprnova, so there's no guarantee it wasn't riddled with viruses, but still... so now i'm back to square one. again.
  9. if it makes a clicking noise then it's probably broken. data recovery costs a LOT... anywhere between $200 and $1000, depending on the circumstances.
  10. i don't really know a lot about different brands because i've always had a makeshift computer... but a friend of mine has a Dell and loves it. my brother has a Compaq and hates it. that's about the extent of my store-bought computer experience.
  11. yeah i know... i just did it for the shock value of the price.
  12. but you should really just spring for this computer
  13. i doubt you'll find a new computer for under $800... and if you do, it probably won't be good for photo editing and things of the sort. you might want to look into putting together your own computer. you can almost always find good sales online at newegg.com or even circuitcity.com
  14. casek's right about the reformatting part, but to install XP all you need to do is enter your BIOS setup (usually hitting a certain button right when the computer starts up, like Delete, etc.) and set your computer to boot from your CD drive. put the XP cd in the drive, save the BIOS settings, restart, and it'll come up with a dos program automatically that guides you through the installation.
  15. i heard Black Ice was crap... but i could be wrong. i use Zone Alarm... it got excellent reviews. i'm pissed... i had to reinstall Windows because i put a new motherboard and processor into my computer and Windows wouldn't work (i guess because of the new hardware configuration)... so now i have to reinstall EVERYTHING... the tons of windows updates, all the software i had..... shit's gonna take forever
  16. Nero is a great program for CD/DVD burning (if you're using a PC). if you want i can send you the install file for a 'free' version once i get home. PM me if you're still interested. <!--QuoteBegin-GucciCondom@Nov 20 2004, 03:42 PM All of the sudden when I play Halo on my PC it feels really fucking laggy and I cant move around good. Like I'll be going and stop..and it will keep walking and looking around and shit. My ping is still low so I don't think I'm lagging. What could be wrong? It always worked fine. Quoted post you're talking about playing online? because that doesn't necessarily mean it's your computer causing the lag... it could be the server you connect to. also, you probably already know this, but don't run things like bit torrent while playing, it hogs bandwidth and memory like it's its job.
  17. it sound like you're computer has a lot of problems due to viruses... this is what i found on that virus you listed... using the info given, delete the necessary files/registry keys and you should be alright. download the free version of AVG antivirus from www.grisoft.com. see if that can help with any of the viruses you have. Virus Name: HLLP.Savno.A Pervasiveness: 2 of 5 Destructiveness: 2 of 5 Wildness: 2 of 5 Type: Virus Aliases: [Win32/]HLLP.Savno.A ; [PE_]SAVNO.A (Trend); [W32.]HLLP.Spreda.B (Symantec); [W32/]HLLP.Savno!p2p (McAfee); [Win32.]HLLP.Savno.A; Date Modified: 21-Oct-2003 Date Published: 19-Oct-2003 Description: Win32.HLLP.Savno is a prepending virus which targets executables residing in the KaZaA download directory. When executed, the virus tries to determine the KaZaA download directory by querying the registry key: HKLM\Software\KaZaA\LocalContent\DownloadDir If this is not found, no files are infected. If this registry key and directory do exist, the virus then searches for, and attempts to infect *.exe files which are between 102,400 and 10,385,024 bytes in size. The virus prepends itself to a suitable clean file with 115,712 bytes of its own code. The worm then drops the original clean host to %Windows%\winww\sn??.exe (where ?? may be a number between 0 and 49) and executes it. Note: '%Windows%' is a variable location. The virus determines the location of the current Windows folder by querying the operating system. The default installation location for the Windows directory for Windows 2000 and NT is C:\Winnt; for 95,98 and ME is C:\Windows; and for XP is C:\Windows. The virus can also search in and beneath following directories: c:\Documents and Settings %Windows%\Temporary Internet Files for Internet Shortcuts (*.url) with the following 'key' words: password log on log-on logon login bank sign-on sign on building society registration register lloyds If any such shortcut is found, a file is dropped to %Windows%\savenow.exe. A corresponding registry entry is also created to launch the application the next time Windows is started: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\savenow="%Windows%\savenow.exe" In the sample Computer Associates received from the wild, this file was corrupted. 18. i hate wireless internet connections... they're so unreliable. you can't trust something that's not physically there. that's my motto.
  19. i had a similar problem, but i have DSL with Verizon. every once in a while, the connection light on the modem would start blinking, indicating that it lost signal, and would return after about a minute. sometimes it would do this every 5 minutes, other times it wouldn't happen for hours. i swear i must have been on the phone with Verizon about 10 times, and every time they were like "it looks to me like your connection is strong" and would tell me the same bullshit i already knew about checking the filters on the house phones and shit. finally after enough hassling, i got them to send someone out to check the line near my house... and sure enough, they found a problem and fixed it... haven't had a problem since.
  20. i'd say either your sound card conked out, or you installed something that conflicts with it. try turning off your computer, opening it up, taking out your sound card, and starting your computer up again... then turn it off again, put the card back in, and turn it on... see if it comes up with the found new hardware wizard. if not, then the card's probably busted.
