  1. Aiight......im gonna axe some questions here because although i keep an eye on google.bikes.tech.whatever, i dont feel like registering somewhere else.

i was given an older (mid 80's?) Motobecane 10 speed that i would like to upgrade to a light/mid loaded touring bicycle. everything's intact, it seems like a good fit, but its a god damn 10 speed and the wheels although fairly decent are 27 inchers. ive got a rear rack for it, need fenders, can hook up some bar end shifters and would like to keep everything else pretty much the same.

-im told the selection for 27" wheels is so depleted and outdated that id be better off building new 700Cs, though id rathher not.

    - the frame, although named the "sprintour", is showing some rust but no other damage and looks like it might not hold up under some load.

-its only a 10 speed and i was told i might be able to give myself more usable gears with a new casette. the cranks only a double.

-its a motobecane which means the whole things french threading and complicates matters more.

id really really REALLY like to keep this bike budget, but as we all know there's a point where its not cost effective to update an old bike. IS ALL THIS SHIT WORTH IT OR EVEN POSSIBLE?

  2. tesseract: (and anyone looking for a cheap bike) all imma say is check the trash. i have found so much good shit in peoples trash. the bike im riding now (fork, saddle, frame, brake, BB, cranks), a fairly nice road frame, and this motobecane im building up as a touring bike were all salvaged from various peoples curbs and bike shop garbage bags. theres a few shops i frequent weekly for random parts for beater bikes, but i get lucky sometimes too.

for instance, i just came across a 700c, 36 hole mavic open pro rim thats the red andonized jaun. as far as i can tell somebody blew up a hub and just bought a new wheel. some woman down the street from me was chucking out this old lime green cruiser thats in like new condition so thats going to a friend of mine. its worth it even for little dumb stuff like extra spoke nipples, hard to find nuts and bolts that get left on ruined frames, etc.

also, if youre in a metropolitan area, keep an eye on bikes that have been locked up for long periods of time and slowly begin to lose their parts. i would NEVER steal someones bike (just because i know how much time and effort goes into it), but im not opposed to borrowing a few things off of a bike that has been rusting away on the corner for a year where it has probably been abandoned.

which shop might this be? a general vicinity is all you need supply. that and where you keep the Campy parts....

  4. somebody had mentioned something on this thread a while back about restoring older bikes: if anybody's interested i came across a blue Shwinn girls frame from the mide-late sixties (?), and its in pretty damn good condition. its basically the girls version of a stingray with handlebars that dont flair out as much. the paint is in pretty good shape, the tires still hold air somehow, and EVERYTHING is 100 percent original. there's some rust but it looks like it hasnt taken to pitting yet. i beleive the model name is the Hollywood. more info later. if anybody wants it, post up.

  5. this may sound like sarcasm but it is definitley not. i think it might be appropriate for whoever's in charge to put up a whole other forum deticated solely to writers who have passed on. it seems like not 3 weeks go by that i hear another writer has died, and these aren't some random toys- these are guys that were real good and i dont understand how so much talent is just dissapearing left and right. anyway, im rambling so to whom it concenrns, give it some thought.

    RIP child
