They wore hats right out of the racetrack. The Rat Pack in their hay day consisted of Sammy Davis jnr, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop and of course, the king Rat himself, Mr. Frank Sinatra. The name Rat Pack was coined when actress Lauren Bacall copped an eyeful of the gang of glamorous reprobates as they lay around like the living dead after a five day round the clock rampage through Las Vegas."You look like a ...Rat Pack"she remarked. So now you know where the name came from, and the place they used to hang out and party for days on end was of course The Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. After the cold war summit in the late 1950's, Sinatra declared that he and the guys would hold their own "summit of cool" in Vegas, one which would last for seven bourbon filled years. The Rat Pack would perform at The Sands at night and in between the partying and womanising they would make films such as OCEANS 11 during the day. These were men in there 30's and 40's behaving like teenagers, yet they were always turned out impecably in clean crisp white shirts, suits immaculately tailored, hair smoothed back, and smelling of the finest cologne, and all had the faces of angels. Frank Sinatra could attract the women as good as he sung. Ava Gardner who he later married once said,"he may weigh just 120lb, but 80lb of that was pure dick. And cool enough was Frank he even told a naked Marilyn Monroe to get her fat ass out of the room when she tried to interrupt a poker game. But Sinatra did not have total control over Dean Martin or Sammy Davis both would walk out on Frank during their years together. But it was Frank who gave Sammy his break, colored people were not allowed in casinos when Frank started performing in Vegas, but Frank did not live to the rules and struck up a friendship with Sammy and offered him a slot on his show. These were magical times in Vegas and everyone wanted to know The Rat Pack and party with them, they could attracted the most beautiful women and wanted for nothing, rumour has it that a doorman did not recognise Sinatra at the sands one night and would not let him in, Sinatra owned 9% of the place at the time,so Sinatra drove his car through the glass entrance door in a fit of rage. Oh to be able to turn back the clock and be able to see one of their shows, but I can recommend to anyone who visits Vegas, The Rat Pack show at The Greek Isles , if you like The Rat Pack you will love the show, if you do get the chance, here's a tip book early to avoid disappointment this is a very popular show. Unfortunately The Sands Hotel was knocked down about four years ago and The Venetian Hotel and Casino was built in it's place, but still nothing can last forever, but the memories are still vivid and going strong. I would like to recommend a film to you it is called the Rat Pack and was never released in England, it was only ever shown on satellite television, it starred Ray Liotta and gives a very good insight in to the life of The Rat Pack, so if you get the chance take a look. If The Rat Pack were bad boys, then they were duly punished in their later life. Sammy Davis died a excruciating death , of throat cancer, Sinatra died from a multiple of illnesses, Dean Martin drunk himself to death after his son was killed in a plane crash, while Peter Lawford ended up a broke drug addict. </span> Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
