Cops may face fitness tests

CPD | City Hall negotiating to make them mandatory, would help those who flunk

City Hall is negotiating with Chicago's police union to require officers to take physical fitness tests throughout their careers.

But under the city's proposal, officers would not have to pass a fitness test for promotion, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

Officers who flunk a test would receive help from the department to get in shape, Bond said. The proposal does not specify how often officers would have to take a fitness test, she said.

Asked if officers could be reassigned to lighter duty if they can't pass a fitness test, Bond said "nothing has been finalized."

Fraternal Order of Police President Mark Donahue would not comment. The fitness proposal is part of the city's negotiations with the FOP for a new contract with officers, whose last contract expired in mid-2007.

Under the city's proposal, officers would take a physical exam to see if they comply with state fitness standards for officers. State Police troopers must pass an annual test that includes bench presses, a 1.5-mile run, flexibility tests and timed sit-ups.

Police Supt. Jody Weis has been critical of the Chicago Police Department's voluntary fitness program, which provides a $250 bonus for passing an annual test.

The demand that overweight cops get in shape has touched a nerve with union leaders who have urged the city to address the underlying problems that cause some cops to put on extra pounds.

The FOP is demanding Weis carve out an hour of every workday for officers to work out on city time and install kitchens with stoves and refrigerators at police stations so officers can cook instead of relying on fast food.

The FOP also is demanding a 24 percent pay hike over four years and a $3,000-a-year residency stipend to compensate officers for being forced to live in the city. The city is offering a 16.1 percent pay raise over five years, according to the FOP's Web site.

Steamed all beef Hot Dog topped with yellow mustard, bright green relish, onions, tomato wedges, pickle spear or slice, sport peppers and a dash of celery salt served in the all-important steamed poppyseed bun.

The toppings are just as important as the order they are applied to the Hot Dog. Add toppings in the following order:

Yellow Mustard

Bright Green Relish

Fresh Chopped Onions

Two Tomato Wedges

A Pickle Spear or Slice

Two Sport Peppers

A Dash of Celery Salt

Remember: When adding toppings, dress the dog and not the bun!
