MPD Announces Successful All Hands on Deck Initiative Preliminary Data Show Over 650 Arrests

WASHINGTON, DC — Chief of Police Cathy L. Lanier announced today that the All Hands on Deck initiative was a success.

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) made over 650 arrests — more than twice as many as the average of the last five weekends, where MPD made an average of 260 arrests.

The results included four arrests in three homicide cases, 11 for aggravated assault, nine for robbery, 14 for UUV, or Unauthorized Use of Vehicle, nine for weapons charges, and 17 other felonies,

such as conspiracy/threats, threats to do bodily harm, felony fleeing, and others. In the homicide cases, two arrests were made in a case from August 26, 2005; one arrest

was made in an April 28, 2007 case; and the fourth arrest closed an instance of domestic violence that ended in Second Degree Homicide, which occurred on Friday.

“I am very pleased with these numbers. The results of the All Hands on Deck initiative show that with increased patrols and visibility, we can make an impact on the amount of crime that

takes place in the District,” Lanier said.

Nearly 3,300 members of MPD were out on patrol this past weekend, each working 12-hour shifts from 6 am on Friday to 6 am on Sunday. The Summer Crime Initiative will continue through August and is

intended to curb traditional spikes in crime during the summer months. District commanders will employ strategies that will target violent offenders, theft, robbery,

prostitution, traffic safety compliance, and neighborhood mediation.

Final overtime costs for this weekend’s All Hands on Deck have not been tallied, but MPD anticipates that it be will be approximately $1.3 million.
