  1. I completely understand and agree to a degree to what some of you are saying. critique and opinions are great and i do not think any tmd members are offended by these comments that are made by anybody. I am sure criticism is welcome. To address a couple of things as part of discussion (not argument to any of the comments), Netch is an abbreviation of the next echelon and it is mealy an umbrella term for trying to take things to the next level which I believe is what most writers try to do to some degree. it is definitely not trying to come up with new slang or make things catch on but rather giving a term for this series of walls as it makes it easier to grasp what tmd is creating. Netch to me is not necessarily the STYLE of painting but taking things to the next level in various ways which result in new ways of working together to create a collaborative production, or style, and process of creating the wall. By exploring these new avenues of working together the finished product is ultimately going to be something different. Graffiti is absolutely about letter structure and to be a great writer strong letters are the first and foremost thing that should be created. it is absolutely true that no matter how many colors you have or how ever many effects are used, the fact remains that if you have weak letters they WILL BE exposed and i believe most people can identify that. In the case of netch productions it is true that an individual piece falls into a world where letters are not as readable and understandable because of all the extra things that have been added to the letters. sometimes things work and sometimes things do not and that is part of what this whole process of creating these walls are about. its the fact of being ok to take risks, experiment and try things out as thats the only thing that will make you a better painter. One thing i believe is tmd and the crews that have taken part in these projects are the facts that most if not all writers that have painted these walls have worked their whole career towards perfecting their own letter style. people such as askew and vans have worked for the last twenty years basing their whole careers on letter structure and it only seems like the limitations begin when they place it on themselves. In saying so, these writers have proven themselves time and time again with traditional strong letter structured styled pieces but the question is what direction do they take their work AFTER they have done everything they possibly can to create an absolute burner? To me the only logical step is to push the boundaries even further and go even more crazy. example: if everybody knows that berst can paint a A+ trackside piece illegally, everybody is aware of his capabilities of what he can do. berst can prove this time and time again but at some point when he turns to a legal wall it is on him to create something that is A+++. Stupid analogy i know, but berst may have already done more than enough A+ pieces on legal walls so it is only natural to try exceed what has already been achieved. Different case scenario of "simple is better". If a writer has done as many simple pieces with no effects and no candy coated extras and has achieved absolutely every goal with his particular style the only natural thing to do is develop that idea and move on and take it to the next level. If this is not the case then please fill me in. All writers that have stood the test of time will have developed their style from different influences and it is on each writer to learn from it and further develop it to something of their own. It is easy to accept a particular style that you may have founded or created for yourself but its on each writer to not stay stagnant and move with the times or be left behind. In the most common format of productions a group of writers get together where a couple of people paint pieces and then there is the character guy. Each person paints their own piece and the character guy paints his character then thats the production complete. there are definitely merits there to working together as a group but concept aside, WHO in this world has painted a production in other ways in a collaborative format where each writer works on each others piece to get a different result. i can personally only say that i know of a couple people that have worked in this format. As part of these netch walls if you look deep enough the letters are there and maybe individual pieces need to be shown to appreciate each section in its full potential and if these walls no longer fall within the category of graffiti to any writers viewing it then so be it. everybody that paints these walls are aware of letter structure and the integrity of each letter is still painted on each name. if so maybe these walls CAN be called spray can art. i personally do not have a problem with that but maybe a whole new discussion can begin as all these writers that do paint these walls, all individually still go out and rock solid letter based pieces. At this stage it can be seen as these writers that are weaving in and out of traditional graffiti and a new movement on its own in auckland, new zealand.. Perhaps these writers are doing graffiti and art at the same time.
  2. I'd just like to add my 2 cents into this conversation and say that everybody has their own merits in what they say but this is how i view what is happening and has been happening during the last year in my eyes... style smasher production by wings, kerso, askew, haser, vents This is one of the earlier walls in auckland featuring members from gbak, tmd, and rtr. the term "style smashers" at this point had been loosely thrown around the crews and a term where each letter used a different color scheme. this wall followed an all over composition where the outcome is suppose to be over the top. i believe that this was one of the first steps towards netch in a production sense. Since then it has lead to several other developments in terms of individual pieces being painted in that style as well as whole productions being executed in this manner. The best examples to show this development is to show it through the members of tmd and how each writer has built on each others ideas, techniques and contexts. normal piece by berst style smasher by wings netch by berst (gbaks) ------------------------------------- normal piece by omega style smasher by omega (featuring jeroo) netch by vans ------------------------------------------- normal piece by askew style smasher by askew netch by askew -------------------------------------- All three of these people are obviously tmd and each person exchanges ideas from each other and builds on each others ideas so that it can develop into something new and greater than the first. the most important thing that comes from these works is the idea of breaking the habit of doing the same thing over and over again and really thinking about the process of creating the pieces and the reflection of its strengths and its weaknesses. when painting each of these pieces each writer is left to their own to decide how previous ideas can be extended. When looking at productions that have been done in the last twenty years it has been established what a typical formula is for creating a production such as a piece, followed by a character then a piece, then another character. There is nothing wrong with this but the next series of walls is a project based on collaboration between writers where writers work together in a totally different way where each writer works on each others pieces to get a different finished result. More ideas are obviously exchanged between writers hence the act of painting finally begins. netch production by deus, askew, berst netch production by askew, stray, berst netch production by stray, vents, repo, berst, askew, misery By looking at each one of these walls there are things that work and things that do not but that can be a totally different discussion on its own. all in all it is part of the process of creating these works that is different from what has been happening for the last twenty odd years. each writer that has contributed to each of these walls have been as important as the next and so to my belief the netch category in auckland falls between gbak, tmd and rtr. in terms of writers pieces looking the same, the images that have been attatched above of individual writers netch pieces, i see people that have shared ideas but 100% completely hold their own to their own name. for netch productions, in the most likely case a berst piece SHOULD resemble a askew piece, or a vans piece, or a phats piece etc because berst would of only done a quarter of his piece if there were four writers painting that particular production. there are people in other countires at the moment that are steam rolling ahead with ground breaking graffiti aswell such as sofles, revok, rime. i believe that the ideas that have been generated from these last couple of months have been on a basis that people such as sofles, revok, rime influence all of us just as much as we do each other.
