  1. The thing that I really enjoy or enjoyed most about this forum was the sense of community. you didn't have to "follow" people or friend them to hear what they had to say. I think social media took away the vibe that we were generally all gravitating to in the first place, that being a place to come where we all had a common ground, which in this case was graffiti. Nowadays all you have to do is like, or friend one person and you get a ton of recommendations of what some algorithm thinks you might like. 12oz always seemed, and hopefully will continue to be, a destination for people of like mindedness.

    The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday banned some over-the-counter antibacterial hand and body wash products, saying they are no more effective than soap and water and could cause long-term harm.

     

    The move affects 2,100 products, or roughly 40 percent of the over-the-counter antibacterial soap market, Dr. Theresa Michele, director of the FDA’s division of nonprescription drug products, told reporters on a conference call.

     

    The ruling does not affect alcohol-based hand sanitizers or antibacterial products used in hospitals and clinics.

     

    The agency said it is banning products that contain any one of 19 ingredients that have not been proven safe.

     

    Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble Co and Colgate-Palmolive Co have said they have either reformulated or are reformulating their products to delete the most common of the 19 ingredients, including triclosan and triclocarban.

     

    FDA spokeswoman Andrea Fischer and Brian Sansoni, of the American Cleaning Institute, which represents multiple cleaning products companies, were unable to identify the products most affected by Friday’s ruling.

     

    The FDA had proposed banning the ingredients in 2013 unless companies could prove they were safe and effective, but was unsatisfied with the data. The ACI, whose members include Dial Corp., a unit of Germany’s Henkel, insists the products are effective.

     

    “Clearly this is an industry that needed a good, swift kick in the triclosan. It took far too long,” said Alex Formuzis, of Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit environmental research organization.

     

    Thomas DiPiazza, a spokesman for Colgate-Palmolive, said none of the company’s products in the continental United States are affected, although a “small quantity of our bar soap in Puerto Rico, where FDA rules also apply, is being reformulated.”

     

    Procter & Gamble spokeswoman Tressi Rose said it will replace “a few” products well in advance of the FDA’s deadline for removing or reformulating the products a year from now.

     

    The regulator also deferred by a year a ruling on three additional ingredients used in consumer wash products – benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride and chloroxylenol (PCMX) – to allow for the submission of new safety and effectiveness data for those ingredients.

     

    Consumer antibacterial washes containing those specific ingredients may be sold during this time, the FDA said.

     

    Manufacturers are conducting research to fill data gaps identified by the FDA, Sansoni said.

    When I first saw this headline, I thought the removal of the many so-called antibacterial products on the market was going to encompass a much larger portion of the products that flood the shelves. After reading this article I'm not so convinced that is the case.

    And how much does this affect the resistance of bacteria anyway? I would think that the practice of administering "precautionary IV antibiotics" in the hospital would be the bigger culprit in building bacterial resistance.

  3. A few years ago I decided to go back to school. Volunteer firefighting led me towards a real interest in medical trauma care. Fast forward 3 years. Back at school, old, but doing well(3.7 GPA). My advisor at my college is pushing me to apply to top nursing programs, UCLA, UC Irvine, etc. This past semester however, I took basic drawing as a requirement. My art instructor has said repeatedly that she does not understand why I am a nursing major and not an art major. I said because raising kids as an artist is rough, and I because I would like to keep the passion of doing what I love for me, and not for what is expected of me.

    Curious to know if anyone on here is pursuing their artistic skills as a means to support themselves and others. or if the real satisfaction is in creating for the sake of creating?

  4. First I didn't drink because I was afraid I'd fall back into old habits, then I realised that being drunk really isn't something that I want.

    I began to dislike drunk people, many friends among them, really acting like assholes / loosers.

    Also when you think of it, it's actually not that much of a great "high", is it.

    Feeling pretty tempted right now. Have finals next week and all I want to do is fuck around and get wasted. I make these excuses in my head that I can take a night off of studying, and that the drinking will release some stress and make future study sessions more productive... Crazy how those thoughts come to be, because I know they are total bullshit.

  5. I used to like the feeling of being slightly out of control. Lately I find that I get bored about six or seven beers in, then I just want to eat some greasy food and go to bed. Even with this, I still feel the desire to drink everyday, but most days I just don't act on it. I think that is largely due to the fact that I just have so much going on that I can't afford to feel like shit the next day.

     

    Do you folks find that you still have this daily desire to drink, and does it ever go away?

  6. Like Fist said, the chances of you getting Lyme's Disease are pretty low. One possible indicator is the bullseye rash that appears after the bite. It is usually a large red ring around the bite with at least one line trailing off, following a blood vessel. If you don't have this, I wouldn't even be worried about it.

    I also have to agree that just yanking them off is a bad idea. That increases the chance of you just pulling the body of, leaving the head still attached, and furthering your chance of infection. Up here we usually twist them off in a counter-clockwise motion.

     

    If you check yourself as soon as possible, you can usually catch them before they latch on.

  8. As a long time lurker and sometimes contributor I must say it's sad to feel the end of the oontz. Had many good laughs and I think one or two good threads. Enjoyed hearing folks opinions from across the globe on various issues, but have to say that my favorite threads were:

    1. Nonsense

    2. Beat the picture above you

    3. the cooking thread ( and as much as I thought you folks were making some awesome looking dishes, there is no way any of you have kids).

    4. The alphabet battle. Had a couple of votes here and there, but that keeps an old man fromn getting rusty.

    Really liked the graff until it was taken over by the toys.

     

    The trains always looked on point.

  9. yeah, i get your point. but i only to do it for warm up sets since im only lifting at between 60-80% of working weight anyways. for the next three sets, i use proper form with feet on the floor and go heavy. if i decide to do last set with light weights until failure, i lift my feet again (i actually just put both feet up on the bench itself). i have noticed that lifting feet into air makes me work harder to stabilize myself on the bench, and it makes me focus more on pushing up equally with both arms rather than have the bar tilt down towards the weaker arm which i see all the time at my gym with people trying to go heavier than they can actually handle.

     

    here's another explanation i found:

     

    By placing the legs on the bench, you push the pelvis back into it's neutral position (posterior pelvic tilt). It's the safest approach, and is generally used to PROTECT a client's back. It engages the abdominals as well as the transverse abdominis and teaches proper posture.

     

     

     

    I usually do a bit of both. Do my own research and then look at a bunch of supps and see which one has what im looking for in it..an example of this would be that there are several types of creatine (different forms), but if say i wanted a supplement that contained more than just one form of creatine, i would get an intraworkout like gaspari's sizeon...it has creatine monohydrate, magnesium creatine chelate, and disodium creatine phosphate in it. What pre-med classes you taking?

     

    I just finished taking Anatomy and Physiology and did an independent study course prosecting cadavers. Taking Microbiology in the fall.

     

    I'm really looking to move from be 6'4", 280lbs to around 250. Ideally with more muscle than fat.

  10. I've been lurking this thread for a bit now and just recently started working out again after 15+ years. I was taking a power circuit course that included some light cross fit type routines mixed with dead lifts, squats and power cleans. I am also taking some pre-med courses and have been learning about the physiological mechanisms of nutrient uptake and excretion. My question for you fellas is do you do your own research on what supplements to take pre/post workout, or do you just trust the label that what they are giving you is in the right combination to what you need?

     

    I hear all types of conflicting talk about what is right and what is wrong, and when to take this or that.

     

    Also have any of you heard of Onnit? I only know of it from listening to Joe Rogan's Podcasts.
