http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40024000/jpg/_40024087_simmonsap_203.jpg'> Hip-hop pioneer Joseph "Run" Simmons, of the rap group Run-DMC, has applied to become poet laureate of the New York borough of Queens, where he was born.

Simmons helped define the rap sound - which some regard as a form of poetry - with Run-DMC in the 1980s.

It seems fitting that a rapper, especially one like Run, be appointed poet laureate. Good luck to him.

queens is a borough, not neighborhood. And it needs/wants a laureate for many reasons, the four basic seem to be; historical, political, economical and educational
