D.C. Residents Encouraged to Help Clean Graffiti

By Joe Holley

Washington Post Staff Writer

Friday, September 7, 2007; 5:56 PM

District residents and business owners who find graffiti a public eyesore,

not edgy public art, can obtain a voucher to help pay for painting over private

property that's been defaced, the D.C. Department of Public Works announced today.

Beginning Monday, they may obtain the voucher by calling the Citywide Call Center

(202-727-1000). It can be redeemed at McCormick Paints (15th and P streets NW)

and Duron Paints (14th and Clifton streets NW).

The paint stores will match the color and will provide property owners with paint,

primer, a brush, roller, pan, drop cloth and graffiti scrubs. It's all free.

The Graffiti Removal Voucher Program is part of Mayor Adrian M. Fenty's graffiti-abatement

plan, announced in June, which is designed to get graffiti off property in the city as

quickly as possible.

"Offering property owners the voucher for paint and other materials is a fast way to

remove graffiti, which is a rising problem in our city," said Department of Public

Works Director William O. Howland Jr.

A property owner should expect to receive the voucher within five days of making

the request. Public Works also can remove graffiti on private property, with the

owner's permission.
