Greek Orthodox Financial Secretary secretly sells Occupied East Jerusalem properties for Jewish settlers

 

 

The General Secretary of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch in Jerusalem, Bishop Arsta Khweis, confirmed the illegality of selling properties, including buildings and land, to Jewish settlers in Occupied East Jerusalem.

 

The confirmation came in the Bishop’s press conference at his offices in the Old City of East Jerusalem Sunday.

 

The Bishop says that a deal was signed by the Financial Secretary of the Patriarchy transferring several properties belonging to the Orthodox Church to various Jewish groups.

 

In his official declaration Khweis said the deal was done in secret and is illegal as it was not signed by the Patriarch himself and did not go through the Church Council.

 

The Israeli Ma’arif Newspaper reported that a group of Jewish investors from outside the area secretly purchased properties near Jaffa Gate, extending from the Old City to the marketplace. The Greek Orthodox Church has long owned the properties and its Financial Officer is not legally allowed to sell them.

 

Palestinian Negotiator Sa’eb Erekat announced the Palestinian Legislative Council will hold a special meeting in order to deal with the issue.
