Start by drawing simple shapes; circles are a good place to start. work with finding eyes and facial features you like. Once you get easy shapes down, you can try new shapes, or tweak the shapes you're good with. Take buff monsters character for instance, all it really is is half an oval with feet, a face and occasionally some tits on it's head, but its a really well designed character.

A lot of the time i'll start with an abstract idea, or a bizzare sentence and work off that. By abstract i mean like... eating lightbulbs or swimming in glue. sometimes characters are inspired by other things in your drawing.

There are lots of other techniques people use, these are just mine.

I drew this in class cause i didn't want to work on the project, i dunno..i was thinking about war lizards..
