Vandals paint a sorry picture of rail security April 27, 2004 A GRAFFITI gang has highlighted serious railway security flaws by defacing the length of a Millennium train carriage in Sydney's main maintenance yard yesterday. The new Millennium train, yet to take any passengers, will have to go back to manufacturers EDI Downer to have the graffiti removed. Police are investigating how the gang got into the Eveleigh train maintenance yards, which is patrolled around the clock by guard dogs, unnoticed. But The Daily Telegraph can today reveal how accessing the yard is just a matter of walking over a bridge from the street. The bridge, accessed from Bridge St and away from the main Eveleigh yard entrance, allowed the gang to sneak into the compound 50m from the train. Wire mesh strung up to stop people reaching the overhead walkway has been cut. The vandals easily bypassed a razor wire fence protecting the Millennium train by cutting off the barbs and climbing over with the aid of a milk crate. The right-hand side of the M27 train was covered front to rear with the graffiti, which obscured lower-level windows. The front of the train was defaced as well, with vandals spraypainting eyes around the headlights and writing on its windscreen destination board. RailCorp yesterday defended its security measures, saying it would seek an explanation from the security firm hired to protect Sydney's trains. "We've obviously got razor wire fencing, high-intensity lighting, we've also got a roving patrol with guard dogs and there's also guards at the gate of the EDI entranceway," a RailCorp spokesman said. "These guys move in crews, they usually have a lookout, they have cut the razor wire and then climbed over it with milk crates." But the Opposition said it was lucky the intruders only spraypainted a train. "This could have resulted in anything, the Government needs to ensure all areas of important infrastructure are adequately secured and are safe," an Opposition spokesman said. this has stirred a big deal over here in sydney, australia. These trains were apparently "un-paintable" (some fellas have painted one before but the media didnt pick up on it..?) and this D2D was all over the news tonight, on just about every channel, props to the lads for getting up big.
