Guest sneak
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- U.S. Marines were greeted by journalists and cheering Iraqis Wednesday, as they took up positions in central Baghdad -- but fierce fighting raged elsewhere in the Iraqi capital. Tanks, troops and armored vehicles rolled into Firdos Square and fanned out around a landmark statue of Saddam Hussein. Dozens of jubilant Iraqis surrounded the statue, as several men climbed it and tied a rope around the monument. "We thought we were going to get a lot of resistance but we never did, so we just kept pushing and pushing until we got here," said Cpl. Steven Harris with the Marines in the square. ------------------------------------------------------------ "The mood of the people in the town is of joy" Raghi Omar - BBC correspondant ------------------------------------------------------------
