  1. I've been using Windows 7 since the initial beta release early this year and it has been nothing but reliable. Since the RTM release I've moved from my Vista media center to Windows 7 Media center on my media PC and moved from XP on my laptop (32 bit due to compatibility issues with some of my VPN software).

Well worth upgrading from XP as it has far more comprehensive security features included and runs at a similar memory footprint or less when optimized so performance is increased.

Not a bad word to say about it so far - it's worth keeping the onboard firewall enabled for the moment as their is a known exploit of the file sharing service (SMB) but this is a minimal threat having tested it - ignore the hype it's not as big a deal people would have you believe. It's no worse then any of the still open vulnerabilities in XP SP2 and Vista.

  2. Geomat – The main issue with firefox memory consumption is caused by the performance enhancements that come from Fast access memory based caching for images and other cacheable objects. It’s quicker to retrieve images, pages and scripts from a memory based cache then a disk based cache and so if you load a page with a large CSS or allot of images you will use more memory.

It’s always a trade off in this situation as to whether you can spare the memory in order to gain a performance increase in browsing – allot of people seem to think more spare memory = better performance which to a point is true but it does get to a point where you’re paid for this memory so you may as well use it to increase performance of common tasks.

Some things you can do to reduce memory consumption if you want follow:

    - ditch un-needed themes, extensions, toolbars..... all these will consume memory under the firefox process and if you don’t use them what’s the point.

    - When you minimize then maximise an application then windows will attempt to trim excess memory as it becomes a background process – you may not save allot but you may save a little.

    - Restart firefox if your memory footprint – this will clear the memory cache

    - About:config is the parameters for firefox to run under. There are numerous settings in here to tune firefox far too many to go into but Google is your friend.

    - I’ve not tried this one because when I used firefox I set it to clear download history on shutdown but apparently a bloated firefox download history can consume memory.

Again with processes and what you need and dont need google is the font of allknowledge - but my rule is if I dont recognise it ditch it. Msconfig will also show you the path to the process so if the path is C:\program files\Really fucking important\process.exe then you probably shouldnt get rid.

    hope it helps

It was something like "Hey, is this you?" With an official looking link. After he clicked the link it sent the same message to everyone in his buddy list. Now his PC acts as little more than an in room billboard, ads upon ads. I ran spyware seach and destroy and adaware on his PC, but it still has MAD pop ups. Any idead?

start > run > MSconfig - go to the startup tab and remove anything that looks shady - for example keep anythign to do with the applications you use (winzip, aim, MS Office, winamp, msn messenger.. ) and if it sounds dodgy then it probably is... This will stop whatever nasty shit is starting when you boot up your PC (this requires a reboot).

If that doesnt help download 'HiJack This' (can be easily found with a google search) and do pretty much the same with that.

    Alright, stupid question but...

My USB port thing is completely fucked. My scanner won't work alongside the digi cam. And the problem isn't the USB cable or either of the devices. It's definetly the USB port. Can I replace this or do I have to buy a whole new computer?

Quick example from a google search -

How come when my computer is busy doing alot of shit at once it makes a weird clicky sound ..........?

    You enabled "weird clicking sound".

Casek, huge problem I have here. The problem is, I'm not sure what the problem is. If situations comes to worst, I think my USB port or whatever is fucked. But then again it's probably just my USB cable wire. Both aren't in good condition really. For example, the covering to the USB port is off and missing and my USB cable wire is fucked. If I do purchase a new USB cable wire and I still can't scan shit, what do I have to do to get this shit working again?

I call it USB cable wire. It sounds normal to me. I don't know any hip computer bullshit lingo slang. So bare with me on all of this.

Fuck my little brother for fucking up my computer when I'm not home. Ugh, fuck life.

    "emo out",

You gotta narrow it down to one or the other - Try and find/steal/borrow another USB device such as a USB mouse/flash disk/camera/mp3 player and see if it works on your USB ports.

If it doesnt then they're prolly the problem.

alternativley you can take your scanner to another computer (again borrow find or steal) and see if this connects ok there - if not it's probably your wire thats fucked.

if both fail - it's probably both that are fucked.

Try installing the latest firmware and drivers for both.

    - Balki - Check this :http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.vundo.html

  5. start > run > msconfig

anything looking shifty gets itself unticked - Then on reboot it willnot load said shifty apps.

hijack this is a goodun but as said above it does require a little sifting through - generally you cna use the same rule as msconfig - if you dont remember installing it and it doesnt look usefull then bin it.

    'Legendary Gypsy Fights'

It's fucking awful, poor ass camera work and one fight goes for 25 minutes without anyone so much as throwing a punch.

I give it minus 2 stars.

I hate people going slow as fuck infront of me. While this does apply to cars, it pisses me off even more when Im walking on a sidewalk and there is like a family of 5 fat people spread wide blocking all traffic and the stupid 8 yr old fatty sees some candy bar in the window and stops and all the stupid fat family stops and none of them have the sense to step aside and let people walk by them.

  12. I often have to buy in laptops for new employees at my place of work and have come across alot of these Acer models..

Anyone had any experiene with them? I've held off getting any because I'm a paranoid kinda guy and dont like to buy things in that arnt tried and tested.

I ask because these tend to be an awfull lot cheaper then the standard brands for higher spec laptops.
