Highway Graffiti Suspect Arrested

By Mark Oswald

Of the Journal

A 25-year-old Santa Cruz man who police said uses the "tagger" name "Dr. Sex" was arrested Thursday morning and charged with the graffiti vandalism that recently defaced retaining walls and artwork along a one-mile stretch of U.S. 84/285.

Officers who searched the home and car of the suspect— *****, also known as *****— found about 550 spray paint cans, according to Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano.

Also seized during the Thursday search were news articles about last week's graffiti attack along the highway north of Santa Fe, notes detailing dates and times of television reports about the vandalism and photos of other "Dr. Sex" graffiti in Santa Fe and elsewhere, Solano said.

"We took so much stuff we had to send a pickup truck to load it all," Solano said. "Bags and boxes— it's going to take some time to sort through it all."

******, who Solano said lives with his parents, is charged with criminal damage to property over $1,000 and unauthorized graffiti on personal or real property greater than $1,000. Magistrate Bill Dimas set his bail at $100,000 cash.

Solano said there are possible ties linking the **** case to graffiti in other states. "But that's very preliminary," the sheriff said.

"This is going to be an ongoing investigation," Solano said. "There are a lot of photos of graffiti in the city (Santa Fe) and other jurisdictions. This is just the beginning of the investigation."

State Transportation Secretary Rhonda Faught said Thursday that last week's graffiti attack along U.S. 84/285 caused between $12,000 and $15,000 in damage.

"Destruction of public property is not a game," she said.

The state Department of Transportation so far has cleaned 3,500 feet of graffiti-covered walls along the highway, and it will take another week to remove the rest of the spray-painted scribbling, the department said.

Along with marring blank retaining walls, the graffiti was scrawled over large renderings of animal figures created by artist Frederico M. Vigil of Santa Fe. The panels with animal figures, including frogs, turkeys and snakes, are part of an ongoing, major improvement project for U.S. 84/285 between Santa Fe and Pojoaque.

The words "Dr. Sex" were legible among much of the mile's worth of graffiti that went up in just one overnight period May 17 or May 18. The "Dr. Sex" tag was painted on at least one of Vigil's frogs, and a rooster's head also was tagged.

Solano said tips called into Crimestoppers helped lead to ******* arrest. He said the sheriff's department investigation led by Det. Nathan Segura initially came up with some information about the highway tagger on its own, but the Crimestopper tips "tied up some loose ends."

"Whenever we have these kinds of cases, if we can get somebody to talk to us in the tagging community, that is one way to tie these kind of cases down," Solano said.

Graffiti with the "Dr. Sex" tag is commonly seen around Santa Fe.

"When they get as (prolific) as this guy did, it really helps us to eventually narrow it down," Solano said.

The sheriff said that about 150 spray paint cans were found in ***** car and another 400 or so were in his house. Some were full, some were partially used and some were empty, he said.

He said that among the photos seized Thursday were pictures of graffiti in Santa Fe and of crews later cleaning the same graffiti off the walls
