Are writers dumb af?

I follow a tonne of writers, graffiti artists, street artists, whatever the fuck you wanna call em on social media. I follow them because I appreciate something about their art.

 

However throughout covid I've found that of all these artists I follow it's always the hardcore graf writers who start being more voc about right wing conspiracy theories, racism, facism insanity.

 

It just seems so strange to me that those that embed themselves in a lifestyle/subculture like graf can be so small minded. 

 

I guess I'm curious, has the scene always been this way. If so, it's fucking lame af and I don't want a part of it. Or perhaps it's just a minority bad bunch?

Anyone who reads history, or is old enough to see societal norms shift can tell you conformity to popular societal norms isn't a sign of intelligence. Neither is judging an entire group of people that are by nature, non-conformist, and inherently "vocal" people. The only thing lame, and stupid is coming on a graffiti forum expecting people here to give a shit about your conformist politics, and pat you on the back for being told what to think. We don't give a shit here if you're vaccinated or not, keep that shit on facebook, or discuss it without being insulting.

They told me and my parents that I fit this discrimination since fucking middle school. And somehow I maintain the critical thought process to spot bullshit when I see it, and not get led down rabbit holes of propaganda. 🤷‍♂️

Yes, and the vast majority of who I consider close friends wrote, or still write, and are very good people. That's not to say I've haven't had a sociopath or two in my circle over the years, but that isn't the norm from my experience. The people I really fuck with, including myself are doing big things IRL, hold it down well for the fam, hood success stories.

 

My remarks, come from a disdain for tow the line conformist attitude being expressed. Shits cringe, at least to me. I think outspoken Trumpers, Republicans, Socialists, and Democrats alike are all equally fucking retarded. At no point in history has the majority consensus, or popular political views been right, not even once. Even half a generation ago when kicking gays out of the military, not letting them get married was mainstream acceptable.

 

In short, if I wanted to listen to cringy mainstream political pontification ala regurgitated Fox News, or CNN, I'd watch that lame bullshit on TV. There's no need for it to permeate every corner of the internet. That said, high level discussion is cool, but thread titles with dumb as fuck in them are just that. You do realize the government, both parties, have literally murdered millions of people in the middle east in cold blood. It's not even arguable it was in defense. In face, most murder worldwide throughout history is the result of people in government. yeah dude we have vastly different experiences. i'm happy for you and your friends though. most people i wrote with are dead or living like they're trying to die soon. dropping graff for alcoholism or addiction or hustling. i know of at least one with a body, at least two who were/are on real deal DV shit. bunch who've went to prison. of the few dozen writers i have personally known in life maybe 7 have safe adult lives now. it's super bleak. when it comes to people in my life who've been attracted to graffiti my funeral suit got way more mileage than my wedding suit in the last ten years. 

 

but it's not inherently political to point out that something is antisocial or nonconformist. it's not pejorative either. i'll be the first to say graffiti's greatest strength is in attacking hegemony. kids in the bronx were writing WE ARE THE VOICE OF THE GHETTO AND WE WILL SURVIVE  in the 1980s even as the world around them and the aids and crack epidemic whispered "die."  there are tons of reasons to not think favorably about societies and structures we live in and ilove when people write it on the walls even if i don't agree with it.

 

i certainly didn't write "toe the line" up there. what i did write is that just about everyone i know who got into graffiti has a set of tendencies and in many cases it led to a lot of real harm that didn't have to do with rustoleum

No, we as Americans have murdered all those people. Because no matter who is in charge, we as Americans allowed it to happen. But it’s damn near always the right who start these wars, and we have no actual left in American politics, so it’s always the centrist Democrats who get stuck trying to clean up the mess that the right wing of this country created. Whether it’s the wars or the economy, it’s always Democrats cleaning up the Republicans mess, that the Republican propagandists turn around and blame on Democrats. While simultaneously taking the credit for Democrats economy that is left for them while they do their best to tank it again, while starting more wars, so that they can turn around and point the finger of both at the next Democrat administration that comes in to clean up the mess. Also, this is 2021. They banned people “ending up in the military” in the 1970’s. I have friends in the military, and every single one of them voluntarily signed up for that shit. Nobody ends up in the military unless they volunteered for that shit.
