Tails0nE
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riding_shotgun "Riding shotgun was used to describe the bodyguard who rides alongside a stagecoach driver, typically armed with a break-action shotgun, called a Coach gun, to ward off bandits or hostile Native Americans. In modern use, it refers to the practice of sitting alongside the driver in a moving vehicle. The phrase has been used metaphorically to mean giving actual or figurative support or aid to someone in a situation. The coining of this phrase dates to 1905 at latest." Not a lot of choices there unless you're willing to roam out of your way, otherwise it's kind of Philly > Chicago > Minneapolis. Scenery depends on what you're trying to see. Lot of good trainspotting opportunities on or within an hour of that route including some "must see" stuff if you have time to fuck around. One day....

(actually could also go in the random thoughts thread) Probably not the answer you want but you can't go wrong taking Amtrak across that stretch, most of that drive isn't going to be that scenic and be focused on dodging traffic. If you're driving I'd suggest long, or overnight stops in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago bare minimum. Mark your highly rated waypoints for food, drinks, good outdoor scenic walks in advance and those three stops should be epic.
Schnitzel
@Mercer yeah you could stretch that journey out only hit the interstates in small doses if you had to make up some time. this being a dream holiday there would be some Amtrak travel involved somehow. Only taken trains DC-NYC, NYC -Boston & Montreal NYC but it was always good barring the border crossing which sucked.

Montreal to NYC is a dope route just for scenery, but as you've mentioned, just on the New York side of the border through lake Champlain and down. Border crossings in North America tend to suck balls.

SMdoubleXL
There is a house down the street. Has a great garden (irrelevant) but I do notice a few things that are really hard not to notice. 1-trump propaganda 2-confederate flag 3-heavy supporter of police 4-has other flag hanging cannot get a clear pic of other flag but it has red stripe on top. White in the middle and blue stripe on bottom. The numbers 1787 (If I can remember correctly) in the center. anyone familiar with this type of flag?
Mercer
@SMdoubleXLMy only guess is it could be a Shay's Rebellion, a precursor to the more famous Whisky Rebellion in the 1790's. Shay's was mostly unpaid revolutionary war vets that rebelled against being taxed 1786-1787. More of an obscure Massachusetts, or New England thing. Considering there's also a confederate flag, and you're not in Pennesee, or Pensyltucky, it could be a similar misguided flex of Pennsachusetts pride.
