Incubation period is 1-14 days. In this period the infected don't show symptoms (such as high temps) but are contagious. That means the screening at airports and checkpoints are unable to contain the spread.

Fortunately, the majority of cases of human to human are close contact. That means partners, family, etc. not random folk that are passed on the street.

Who, whoa, whoa, @Hua Guofangbro since when has it not been cool to applaud slow painful deaths on a massive scale?

Bro, do you even edgy?

I know, I really should get with "it", buy something with the Supreme logo on it, post some woke memes and vape. Shit, anyone would think I'm a boomer or something shitting myself for family that are locked up in a city-sized incubator of creeping death.

@Hua GuofangI'm blown away by the fact the CCP government thinks it can just build a functioning hospital from scratch in 2 weeks. This nincompupery may have been what lead to this problem in the first place. This circles back to previous conversations on here about not having build quality for military applications because something as simple as getting the properly rated grade of steel for these applications is impossible in China. Poor craftsmanship seems to be an almost encouraged cultural feature, and from working with several Chinese contractors here I learned quickly they hold safety in much lower regard. I've got plenty of anecdotal stories like a Chinese contractor bypassing electrical fuses because they kept blowing instead of fixing the issue risking everyones lives on the job site. I kind of think we should quarantine/end travel entering from that country until they get this Corona virus sorted out one way or another. Correct information is never shared unless it makes the CCP look good, so It's hard to trust they're even capable of dealing with this problem realistically if they're unable to be honest even with themselves and face the truth.

The logo of the lab where this originated from

Bullshit.

On so many levels. For starters, the pic on the left is from Shanghai, not Wuhan. Secondly, the bio lab in Hankou that everyone is talking about is part of a Chinese university. The pic on the left is a private business.

this is just the usual 4Chan shit where some one starts a rumour so they can beat off when gullible folk fall for it.

I'm sure if y'all had family over there too you'd feel a little differently about saying such silly shit.

The news section is my favorite forum, but I'd rather see it shut down for as long as needed than continue on like it is right now.

I was hoping to build it out with good, provocative content and get some more users engaged in here. If it's a shit show, that's never going to happen.

I think it's representative of what's going on in the world in general.  A certain side of people believing a certain thing want to silence those that believe something else and they will go to any measure to make their narrative be the one that is "the truth".

Just look at what happens on reddit in a big city's sub.  Whoever made the sub gets to be the moderator and they can be as biased as they want.  The sub becomes an echo chamber for people that believe what the moderator believes and anyone that doesn't jive with that is banned/silenced.  New people that are naive followers just do and say what everyone else in the group does thinking that they're fitting in with what is generally accepted as the truth, not knowing that there are a large number of people that have been silenced.

This is all making me not really want to participate in any discussions here which is the exact opposite of the desired effect this forum should have.  It'd be nice to grow but I'll just not participate at all if people are going to try to pull that reddit/MSM media narrative/fake news/silence the opposition/socialism crap here on 12oz.  It feels like the mod team is being controlled by the user base.... which is fine.

I'll just probably go back to helping answer computer questions when Misteraven needs my help and stop offering my opinions and expertise to others here.  I don't like wasting my time and it's begun to feel like that specifically in the News section of this forum.

That's my 2 cents.

Who is silencing anyone? You have your opinions, other people have theirs. Thats called disagreeing, and at worst arguing. Just because someone uses sources of MSM for basic information such as numbers dead and so on doesn't mean they’re trying to push a false narrative.

Aside from that.. What just happened is someone tried to tell me how i was thinking and i addressed it, is that not allowed? Who is trying to silence who then? Should i just let it go unanswered? So this person, who i often refuse to name at this point, that i generally ignore, can follow me around the forum talking various kinds of unprovoked shit everywhere i go? I dont seek this fool out, he still comes to me.

I was as cool as a cucumber explaining my train of thought on the last page, still am.

You guys need to tone things down or I'm shutting the thread down.

I know the entire world is at each others throats, but maybe the people here on 12oz can be better than that.

Is this  your stern dad voice?  OK Boomer?

12oz is also the home of a long running S or T thread, kind of sets the bar pretty low for what we can be "better than."

Given everything that has/does/will go on in Oontzland the content/quality of this thread seems pretty minor to reach shut down levels, can I get you a beer?

Personal opinion I've seen the News and discussion threads bring out the worst in people, I don't even bother with them any more and wouldn't have even seen this thread other than it appearing as new content.

The lab itself doesn't even have a logo. The virology dept of CAS does and it's nothing like an umbrella. Have a google and you'll find it pretty easily.

4Chan doesn't really bother me but 8Chan/Kun does though. I have no probem with the practicle jokes 4Chan plays on the net but I do see the dumbing down of society when people buy into some of the more idiotic conspiracy theories and it's already out there that SARS/2019_NcoV are US/rich people testing weapons. etc. etc. And it's not that I have family in Wuhan that are in lockdown with young children but the way people actively make bullshit up that has real impact. Getting idiots to bend phones is one thing but getting the unhinged to send pipe bombs and shit like that is another thing altogether. Not saying this is an example of activating the unhinged but it plays into it and generally dumbs the place up, IMO.

I mean, the pic on the left even says Shanghai in English. They're not even trying!

Last sentence first - agreed 100%. Never trust the Party. And even if the high-level in Beijing are working/acting hontestly, you can trust the provincial level to be fucking it up to hide their corruption and incompetance.

Regards the hospital, I read that they were able to achieve this in 2003, but I don't know much about it. I also think that it's going to be more of a quarantine/treatment ward rather than a hospital. As in, I can't see it having operating surgeries, fMRI machines and all the other high-end stuff a normal hospital will have. I can see this just being wards and beds, not much more.

I'd caution judging what's possible based on local contractors that you come in touch with. I can't stand working with most Chinese orgs where the people weren't born in the country in discussion (that even includes buying coffee). As most ethnic Chinese don't have a great passion for their work, they're all about making money. So they give negative fucks about doing a shit job and charging a high price. Ethics aren't really a thing in China, it was bred out of them during the Cultural Revolution and without religion there is little empathy or guilt either. This is a massive generalisation, mind you. Of course, there are also brilliant people within those masses and my wife is one of the most empathetic and caring persons you could meet - as is her mother. My wife is also an honest and hard worker, which is how she rose from the depths she grew up in.

China can and does produce high-end stuff and can knock out some very impressive shit. I watched them build a full subway system in the space of 18 months, from go to whoa. I thought that we'd see cave ins and derailments because of shitty work. It's now 11 years later and all seems fine. We all know about the tofu schools in Wenchuan and the bridge collapses, high-speed train crashes, etc. What most aren't aware of is that the majority of people who were responsible for this shit (skimming money and buying shit quality materials..., or not putting any steel reinforcement in at all!) are in prison and all of their riches have been taken away from them.

Take a look at the island building in the South China Sea. To my knowledge, no country has ever been able to build islands that quickly, at such a distance from land and in potentially hostile territory. I actually don't put it past them to build an adequate building of size in 10 days. Just don't expect it to look like the CCTV tower in Beijing, though.

I couldn't agree more. I've stopped engaging on politics in general because it was just spiralling into "suck my dick, USA USA" and there's no value in that. I can't see where anyone is being silenced but I can see where people are being shouted down with abuse and choosing to not engage anymore.

As much as @Mercerand I can get under each other's skin, I believe we truly are here to listen and learn and have a good discussion, as are some others. It would be a pity if that was lost because of childishness.

Excellent article if anyone wants to read it in full: https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/01/27/dont-blame-bat-soup-for-the-wuhan-virus/

And when it comes to disease, it’s not what’s being eaten that matters as much as the conditions—such as the standards workers are trained to meet, the lack of barriers at markets, and the absence or bribing of regulators and health inspectors. The H1N1 virus, after all, started not in any uncommon species, but in pigs.

And that’s where China really does have issues. The country’s food safety standards are notoriously bad, despite numerous government-led initiatives to improve them. Food scandals are common, and diarrhea and food poisoning are a distressingly regular experience. Markets, like Huanan, that aren’t licensed for live species nevertheless sell them. Workers are undertrained in basic hygiene techniques like glove-wearing and hand-washing. Dangerous additives are commonly used to increase production.

China’s conditions are not unique. It looks, in fact, a lot like the United States did in the past, before muckraking exposés led to the creation of modern regulation systems. Even today, the United States can lag behind best practices on such issues as antibiotics in feed, cattle slaughter, or poultry washing. And, as with the American public of the 1900s, the Chinese citizenry badly wants change. Seventy-seven percent of the public ranks food safety as their single biggest concern.
