NightmareOnElmStreet
I’ve been working on painting my daughters enormous staircase bunk bed for over a week. Fucking rained in the middle. Ruined my primer job. Re-sanded and patch primed everything only to turn around and meet yet another snag. And this isn’t even house shit exactly lol. God dammit. Explains why I’ve been boozing so much lately holy hell. IMG_6029.MOV 1 3

mr.yuck
Jesus tits almighty. I literally couldn’t have picked a worse, more fucked up time to try and remodel a house. I ordered tile for my bathrooms almost 2 months ago and that shit still isn’t here.
mr.yuck
Okey dokey y’all! So here is some step by step hardwood flooring installation shit. Progress was making me kinda mad, Home Depot’s rental tools are shit and even with all of my higher math functions firing off on all cylinders, @Schnitzel it’s big cry baby time. So without further ado; here’s where it all went wrong. The mission was to start the flooring on the far wall of the master bedroom and work it out the door, do the hallway and have the flooring perfectly terminate into the existing stair nosing. Step one was to use a 6 ft level as a straight edge and continue the line from the stair nose farther. Like this: Off of this line I pull a measurement to the back wall of the master bedrooms behind me. There is no picture for this. But anyway, I ended up with 2 points against the back wall that let me create a starting line to run the first row of flooring from. According to my calculations, By the time I worked the flooring all the way out, everything should have lined up perfectly. Instead I have a gap a pencil could fall into. Some one did some really shitty repairs in the hallway floor from downstairs at some point. The really fucked up the level of the floor. Check this shit out! this one plank sits about a 1/4 higher than it’s continuation beeeecause… ta-daaaaah!! The new floor joist they sistered in is some how a 1/4 inch higher than the old one! It took some serious muscle to fuck an entire floor out of wack like this. Here was my best solution. Death by a thousand cuts and then smash those little bits out of the way with a hammer. Then I patched the small opening back up. I’m all out of pictures. More to come tomorrow! 1 5
NightmareOnElmStreet
Sounds like a enormous pain in the dick. Also I cannot believe how fucked up the supply chains are STILL, across the board. Also, surprised to read you rent any tools I woulda thought you had a whole department store to yourself with the amount of different work you do. Here’s a few things from my house land. Will post more as I go on but so far it’s been surprisingly easy ancient one layer wall paper removal, skim coating, and painting on first level. We had a upstairs apartment that we are renovating to convert the house into a single family. That’s where the bill of work is. So far kitchen demo and serious pain in the dick kitchen tile layer removal and Composite hardwood installs. I’m not near as handy as some of y’all so my buddy helped with a lot of technical stuff. I can be shown a time or 2 and left alone but I’m terrible with tape and what not. bought very expensive dustless drywall sander setup because I needed it for work anyways. Tax write off. Huge game changer if you do a lot of muddin especially in your own shit. 1
NightmareOnElmStreet
Floors came out nice and we started in on this ship lap wall which will eventually be our master bd with a built in head board on said wall. We are also keeping the kitchen lines active by installing a little gas fireplace and a bedside bubbler for lazy ass on hand water lol. Apparently a thing in some countries. I think it’s pretty baller and I’m looking forward to that part. 2

I’ve only used it twice both times in my own house. Which is already slightly still dusty from working and from what I can see no dust containment needed. Crank that fucker up and go. Shit is awesome. No dust mask. Straight chillin. Not as strong as the festool one judging by the videos but now I’m not sure they are even real. (The ones where dudes just let’em rip across the ceilings all by themselves) the mirka does have suction enough to stick to the walls but not just hang there.
Dark_Knight
@mr.yuck what is your opinion on carpet? I’ve been wanting to sand and refinish my dining and living room, but I just don’t have enough free time to do it myself. And the wait time and price for someone to do it for me isn’t desirable. Been thinking of just laying carpet in the living room. Dining room Is passable how is, so if obviously leave that uncovered.

Dark_Knight
@nicklesndimes well I’d like to finish the floors before I furnish the main floor. Was holding off but now it’s irritating me not having a main floor with anything on it. A rug would help get by but I just want to get this shit done and not worry about it in the future 1
Mercer
Carpet is easy AF, one night in a youtube binge should show you all you need to know. Don't skimp on padding, and you'll only need to buy a knee kicker, and a proper cutter to do the job right. Without using a knee kicker it will form wrinkles on you, worst rookie mistake I've seen others make. 1

mr.yuck
@Dark_KnightI don’t prefer carpet. Also, I tried my hand at sanding down a customers floor and slam fucked their shit up. I was able to mitigate my fuck up and they said they were happy so I took the check and bounced. The good thing about carpet is, it’s not permanent. You can install affordable grade carpet for the time being while you save up to have some one come refinish your floors. I know that shits pricey but if they are doing true dustless sanding, their set up is like 30k+. I am a fan of area rugs. This way you don’t have to nail tack strips into your hard wood and staples through your carpet pad. If you have a large carpet place around you, I’d call and ask if they do BINDING on sight. If they do, you can go in there and buy any patterned carpet and have the edges bound for a small extra fee and have custom sized rugs. Rule of thumb is 1-2 feet from the walls for an area rug. Carpet comes in 12’ or 15’ wide rolls so you can essentially do a room that is 19’ wide. 1 1 1

If you are riding around and see some one installing carpet some where, hop out and talk to them. There’s no way you are paying some one more than $300 to install carpet and pad in a house your size. Definitely spend money on carpet pad. Not at Home Depot or Lowe’s. They rape on 8 lb. pad. That’s how they can offer “free” install.
Dark_Knight
Will it damage the wood beyond repair? I want to just roll with carpet but I don’t want permanent damage from nails and such. I’d pay someone to lay it.

One Man Banned
Don't know how much of a concern it is but check what the padding is made out of, some padding deteriorates to dust across time and some can do some damage to your floor long term. I've only seen the 1st happen, but looked into this when I was getting some area rugs a while back.
mr.yuck
@Dark_Knightno I wouldn’t imagine the damage would be permanent. It just adds more prep work ($) when you go to get them refinished. Some poor kid pulling 1000s of staples out of the hardwood with pliers. They have a sandable stainable putty that they use to fill all nail holes and small cracks that open between the boards with age. More prep work ($)
