The project car thread

Recommended Posts

an acquaintance of mine had built a belly tanker to run at bonneville. I wish I had photo of it

My car is moving forward unfortunately I have not been able to go up to my car due to our current situation but the work on it has continued and my homie has been keeping an eye on the progress.

As of right now We are only shooting it with white sealer and the roof and spears will be painted the original sherwood green for the time being.

I will be shooting it with white metal flake and aqua metal flake to add a little bit of dimension but that will have to wait until the following winter as I am not really in the position to dump more money into it being out of work. At that point I have another friend who will be teach me and help me with polishing all the stainless

I finally changed headers with no cat, wanted my car to make more noise.

Now, by not having a cat, I can go from Octane 91 to E-85 .

I read it brings good benefits and no long term defects (as far as driving the vehicle correctly).

Main downfall is gas milage, but gas is cheap and i can always go back when ever.

So for now, I have to run my car to empty, fuel up on e85 and tune the ECU.

I have a full tank now, but making a 80mile run tonight.

Finally did it.

91 Octane I USED to pay around $30, during this crisis, I am paying around $25. Here is my new weekly rates 💪💯😎pixlr_20200420090632431.thumb.jpg.55266a9cc794012ddb7e98eee41d483c.jpg

E-85 I burn more, but I will update you guys on how long this gas lasts me.

Next process is to kill what ever 91octane is left on my lines (fuel trims) , and tune my car....

pixlr_20200420090815064.thumb.jpg.2eb0771adc2659d94dac0231233eb902.jpg

I'm suppose to drive it below 3000RPM for a couple miles, let the ECU learn the new fuel.

After fueling up, I drove normal, and plan to do so up until I get off work tonight. I usually hit morning rush hour and here is an opportunity to test this new fuel.

I have been running my vehicle tuned with 91, so I should be able to catch the difference, well, I'm hoping so.  My first tune , I did notice it right away. My second tune took awhile until I finally noticed the change in power.  I expect faster results with this one since fuel is "immediate ", we will see.

Wish I could get E85 easier where I'm at.  Been using 100LL aviation fuel with some additives for some of the older cars in the fam's stable.

Finally going to wrap my daily next week.  I waited way too long and I've got loads of rock chips to sand out first, but I'm a little geeked to get it going.  I've done a bunch of paint wrap color changes for customers and it's not exactly good business sense to not have a car on hand as a reference for customers.

So I had been planning on starting an el camino project here soon. I was thinking somewheres between 69 and 79. My wife asked me if I could convert my project plans into an off road doomsday vehicle so I did some googling and found this. This is what Im gonna build.

In high school, I knew a guy that had an el comino but on the opposite of this one.  Can't remember how much horse power but the thing sound like an alcohol dragster.  Basically the guy spent some serious money on the mechanics, threw in slap shift, and left it looking like a complete turd, but complemented it with nice chrome wheels.  Then take it around town hit the accelerator and easily get the car on three wheels.

Thats awesome @ndvI love sleepers. Nothing like watching some one get smoked at a red light for trying to race what they think is a shit box.

Shit. I didnt have any idea how expensive these fucking things were even in shit condition.

I just found some ones unfinished project that fits the bill nicely for $3500.

@mr.yuck

I was sure what to think when you said 3500 for someone else's project.   I was sure if it was one of those guys who have classics that need heavy work but price it as the restored vision they see.

But from seeing these pics looks like a good deal due to the condition of the body.   The thing is pretty much at a stage of "make it to whatever spec you like"

I bet he'll negotiate.

@ndv

I probably wont talk them down. I have a feeling they might be selling this project to make ends meet.

My last project was an absolute cluster fuck. I bought a 73 buick centurion. Every single panel and pan was blown out and the vehicle was such a small run, none of these companies wasted their time repopping anything for it.

So I found a duece and a quarter roller on ebay that I picked up for $500. I was gonna swap the 455 and tranny from the centurion into the electra but some more other shit went sideways and nothing came to fruition.

I hear ya on that, makes sense.

Yeah, right now, I am debating if I wanna buy a car right now (something more reliable) or deal with the unexpected surprises of breaking down intermittently...

I just really do not know what I want/need and the way the manufactures engineer cars today, is the reason why extended warranties are so popular.

*for example on the engineering side of things:  My sister owns a 2014-2016 For Explorer.  Well, Ford thought it would be funny to place the water pump behind the cover panel for the timing belt.  So, basically to do the job right to replace a water pump in these things, you first have to remove your valve covers, injector assembly (the whole nine yards), a few belts, alternator (i think, can't remember), anyhow, long story short.  It's a $5,000.00 job at a local mechanic, not sure what dealer charges...  Anyhow, a $65.00 water pump gets you a new timing belt, a few seals and gaskets, and a bunch of labor for $5k

And this is just an example of why I'd rather go backwards in stead of forwards in regards to years on automobiles.   But it's a tough decision, because at the moment with a new car I will not have to worry about breaking down at random because the car is 26years old.

Which come to think of it, it brings on a whole new topic of feelings and point of view i have towards  this "make america great again"  thing.

I just do not know what to get.  Funny thing is, despite what I just said, I am looking at used.

I buy all of my cars that I need to depend on 2 or 3 years used. Sometimes they are still covered by manufacturers warranty, sometimes dealership warranty. I've only ever bought 2 vehicles brand new and they were both work vehicles.

I got really tired of one thing after another breaking down on my daily drivers. I think the key is to sell it in another 2-3 years before it starts crapping out and it depreciates completely.

I cant even begin to fuck with dealerships and how they charge for any given task.

Not really sure, but those things are cool as fuck.

I can't keep thinking about upgrading to an RS3 for my daily, but Covid is kicking my ass dollar wise to make the leap to that platform.  These Iroz RS3's online just fucking rip.  I hate the fact that they're DSG's and not manual, but you gotta pick your battles I guess.

@johnnyi had to look up what half of that shit was lol. My mechanical knowledge dies with the introduction of fuel injectors.

So I watched a few videos. Man those shits are beast brother.

I tell you what brothers and sisters..... I've been enjoying the fuck out of having a 12 valve cummins.  The 6BT engine is fuckin rad as shit.  I know a lot of people swap the 4-cyl version into jeeps and such.  This motor is so good it's got me thinking it needs to go in all kinds of other vehicles.... like my suburban.

edit: this: https://www.dieselconversion.com/comprehensive-kit-chevy-1988-1999-6-5l-diesel-4l80e-1989-1998-12-valve-525.html?options=cart

I have a 1999 GMC K1500 Suburban that is in really good condition except for a cylinder miss.  I'm considering buying the above kit and another 6BT from ebay or something..... and swapping the suburban.

@mr.yuck- if you have ANY questions about anything car related no matter how technical, please ask. I already know a lot about all the technical shit that many "car guys" aren't versed in.  Namely: ECU tuning, electronics, and engine tuning theory.

"The exhaust is spooled up, you know, in the turbo, right there, and that shoots the air into the intake on the intercooler."

I was a bit confused myself, I just couldn't put my finger on it, but I knew something just didn't quite add up.
