Antifa-shion - Anti-Social Social Club, style and a sign of the times

Just got this article delivered to my inbox via HighSnobiety https://www.highsnobiety.com/p/assc-fw18-drop-riot-shield/ and thought it was really interesting.

Texted it to @6Penniesand he responded with a comment about Antifa-shion, which I though was both funny and a bit sad.

Personally I think if they used an actual functional riot shield and not some stupid fake version, accessory like some of the couture plate carriers and molle vests I've seen, that this is actually pretty fresh. With all the divisiveness and upheaval, its a pretty powerful statement. And as a company that I know is generating over $22 million a year in sales, they can (and should) be developing editorial pieces that help position the brand and create buzz.

No doubt, they probably only made 3 of these and all went to the owners and friends, yet will be marked as sold out despite a ridiculous price tag, it's still an interesting piece.

Not at all a supporter of Antifa (in fact, think its the opposite extreme of the same shitty segment of society they claim to mostly protest against... Another discussion for another thread), but yeah... I can see how having a riot shield almost makes sense in the culture we find ourselves living in and definitely a sign of the times.

Thoughts? Discuss...

this is some fuckboy cashgrab shit. I know that "fashion activism" has always existed since revolts were first invented, but this is peak coonery.

ASSC was a brand that started off being geared towards Los Angeles Asians who wanted their own "streetwear identity".

Now look at what its become.....a caricature of city lifestyle. ASSC is what I believe "hipsters" imagine what streetwear should be.

This bullshit is derivative and adds nothing to the subculture.

And I agree that anti-fa is just as bad as the extremists they claim to be fighting. This is why I explained in the other threads, that I hate tribalism in this form. It creates echo chambers and on top of that, you get rules and laws that suppress and oppress the centrists and the people who walk the middle ground. So fuck both of those groups.

"External costs and expenses will ALWAYS create their own markets"

My economics professor told me that. He explained that if a "movement" becomes popular enough, then capitalism will fill in the "needs" and "voids" of that movement. Before you know it, brands will start advertising shit you'll need to be "ANTIFA".

"GET THE RIGHT DEODORANT TO FIGHT NAZIS"

"ARE YOU WEARING CALVIN KLEIN'S ANTIFA BOXER BRIEFS"

"GRAB THE ANTI SOCIAL SOCIAL CLUB RIOT SHIELD AND REPRESENT YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS"

"WHY ARENT YOU WEARING THE HAIR GEL 85% OF ALL ANTIFA IS USING TO BREAK DOWN FASCISM"

Baffles me on multiple levels of stupidity here.  Not quite sure who would even buy that.  If the concept was to pussify a tactical item I say job well done.  Makes a bold statement: I'm a jerkoff.

Real honor would be in having one that you pulled from the hands of the local police, or at least grab a dropped one or steal one.

Also somewhat touches on what I've been saying for a while that people really don't know how to protest anymore in a meaningful way that achieves results.

For any of these anti protest groups would have loved to have seen them make a small run of these produced to real specs for a few of their main, front line people.  Then show up to their next protest with them, would love to see the look of surprise on police faces.

Idiocy is neither left nor right thinking and falls anywhere along the spectrum.  There are extremist groups on either side that are pretty dumbass, and a portion of that is sometimes due more to their approach than their beliefs.  Sometimes extremism does have a place, sometimes you might have to act to right a fucked up situation before more harm is done, or you just have to get shit done while the rest of the world is still figuring out how to do what's right.

Anyhow, that thing brought some amusement.

Not even sure if any of the recent ones aren't anymore. not saying they're all engineered from jump street but lots of evidence of these protests /movements being appropriated.

the latest "protest" I heard that I agree was bought was when Candace owens says she was harassed by antifa at a restaurant during breakfast because shes a "famous black conservative"

I truly believe that she paid for that protest to advance whatever narrative she wants....I just think she wants to stay relevant

Or the flip side of that equation where rich people pay people to protest to move their agenda along.

I think you'd be surprised how much this happens on all sides of the argument and not just on domestic issues but between nations. The Colour Revolutions and the Cold War was characterised by that kind of stuff on an international level. Indonesia is ridiculous for the way whole townships are paid to protest and at its most cynical it's poor people bribed with food to just get on buses and go somewhere to fill a crowd out.

Brought to my attention this morning by @6Pennies...

For $800 USD you too can look like a Black Bloc Anticapitalist.

I'm not super knowledgable with Japanese culture, but don't think they're prone towards sarcasm or being ironic. None the less, I think its's brilliant in its social commentary. Goes to show that nothing is truly off limits and this look book really strikes at the heart of how I see most the people that subscribe to this ideology.

Thoughts?

And here to balance the scales... Blexit!

Bummer to see Kanye back down the way he is, but then again, maybe I'll go make a coffee and come back to see him once again leading the conversation. Definitely living up to the bi-polar thing he seems to be trying to turn into a trend.

And for the record, I don't necessarily agree with all his positions nor how he communicates them (or attempts to). I do however, strongly believe in the freedom of speech, however unpopular and believe that we're moving into dangerous times when violence or even the threat of violence is used to attempt to shut it down. To think that tamping down an opinion or position, regardless of how fucked up it is, somehow makes it go away is naive and dangerous. As a society, we're better off allowing for open dialogues. If we instead put those efforts towards, teaching or at least encouraging, people how to have informed discussions, driven by fact and conducted with respect, we'd go a lot further towards opening eyes, minds and hearts. But then again, that's probably not the goal.

That said, if you aren't concerned about how Kanye was treated throughout this whole round, you need to turn off the news and out a little original thought and reflection into how quickly the masses are willing to jump on someone that doesn't toe the line.
