I was having a conversation with my wife about this idea of whether or not forums would fall off.

I think in the current climate, people are wanting to go back to something that feels more concrete in the experience. Even if this is still a digital interaction, and only a few of us know each other IRL, we all know each other here. Along with that sense of actual community is something that's a bit less transient than the news feed, or story feed, etc. Each one of those is a persistent stream of information that one ingests and moves on. Here, we represent our ideas in a static format, or at least, a movable piece that can be traversed at one's own speed.

I'd like to think this place will pick up again. I suppose us having this conversation at all is indicative of such. Obvs, Raven can see the visit counts so he'll know that in the explicit sense.

But, like the man said, it really is our space to do with as we please, so it's lack of movement or lack of interesting content is really on us.

In terms of harmful places on the internet 12oz is pretty far down on the list. I do not think my child would be interested in digging into my participation but any embarrassment there I could handle and have always tried to be pretty quiet and selective about participation anyway.

And yes, the forum as a format has been outmoded by social media and as often as not has hastened it's demise by trying to imitate social media.

I agree with the first part, not so much with the second. I think social is just very easy to consume and originally hit the sweet spot between rewarding distraction and ease of use / personal investment. Seems to me that most people are turning their back on social and I believe many more would if there was something to replace the social interaction with. I do think it needs to maintain a similar ease of use, but I also believe people are looking for a richer experience. Not sure what that looks like or am I suggesting that forums might be the solution, but clearly Reddit has a monster following and I think it falls closer to being a forum that it does to being something resembling Instagram, Twitter or Facebook.

Likewise, I've even noticed how certain threads on here have started moving pretty fast (at least compared to most these days) and I think that is evidence that people do enjoy interacting within the forum context. Obviously its dependent on enough active and like minded individuals that checking in, returns the reward of content worth the time to have come check in. Having built this from day one, it really does feel to me like the earliest days of the forum in that it was just a handful of friends that knew each other in IRL and therefore had established relationships that ed to real conversations. Along the way strangers joined up, saw what was being discussed, lurked for a bit and then finally jumped in with a comment. Over time, some dropped off and many others established themselves as part of the community and are still on here posting. Many others have dropped off and a few have checked back in on occasion.

Again, seems to be whats happening now. We pick up some lurkers, lose a few, but based on what the established few on here continue to talk about is what leads to the new people dropping a comment that often leads to their eventual participation and engagement.

On a different yet related note, I've all but decided to consolidate the website further so that its essentially a forum and online shop and not much else. The forum is its own thing and seems the tech part is finally stable and functioning well. The shop is the outlet I need to bring 12ozProphet back into being the brand it began life as, releasing new projects and products. Seems I've made a lot of headaches for myself trying to develop original content (features, etc) that nobody seems to really care about. Its just way too much work to put those together for the result I see (probably why even the successful brands done really bother with it) and of course, all the energy and money that goes into that is taken away from developing new projects and products that have the potential to actually help pay for everything on here.

Anyhow, sort of in the midst of that now.

Raven, is there any kind of page scraping device that can scour the net for pics of graff an constantly load them into a thread? I know that page scrapers exist but mainly for text. As I've mentioned elsewhere, the core of this place is graffiti and there are not enough people loading it up anymore for that to be a magnet for old and new users - I know brickslayers and paper chase are the first place I look at when I log on.

A simple thread that had some graff in it each time people logged on, good and bad, might be interesting. Knowing that every time you log in there will be some fresh content might generate some interest. Long shot and might not be worrtht he effort now I read my own workds. Meh....

Not sure, but sounds like something that would exist. I think the more hands off, the more generic it'll be though. Once shit becomes too easy, it loses its value.

I think some routes are easier than others, but usually you get out of something what you put in.

^ i was thinking the same thing except my son is four now.. (yes i have a kid) like, how will the internet or technology even evolve within the next lets say five years even..? would it still be the same or would social media platforms evolve so much that message boards like this would become obsolete even..? But, if 12oz is still around by then i wouldn't mind my son oontzing it up.. I feel like we've all grown from this website in one way or another believe it or not and it'd be cool to see if peeing in girls butts would still be a thing when im older.. If he ever answered me with boogie hands tho or calls me a tpwf i think i might die of laughter honestly..

NOT YET, BUT WHEN THEY'RE A LITTLE OLDER, SURE, WHY NOT... JUST DON'T WANT HIM TO KNOW WHO I AM ON HERE, BUT HE WOULD RECOGNIZE THE NAME... MY OLDEST 9, KNOWS I USED TO WRITE AND ON OCCASION STILL DO. HE'S SEEN ME THROW UP SLAPS BEFORE, I'D BE COOL WITH HIM LOOKING AT GRAFFITI PICTURES, BUT IF CHANNEL ZERO WAS EVER AGAIN LIKE IT WAS IN IT'S HEYDAY, I MIGHT HAVE A PROBLEMO WITH THAT...

This would actually be pretty interesting.

The workflow would have to go something like this:

  1. scraper finds files with *.jpg or other image file extension
  2. places all files in some bucket
  3. train machine vision algo to assess whether "graffiti" or "not graffiti"
  4. have that algo run against collected images from step 1,2
  5. compare images assessed as "graffiti" against all hosted images in 12oz forum that are still active links or uploads
  6. have bot upload into thread

The problem here is the idea of constraining the images that are even reviewed in step 1, 2. The actual machine vision part is not too problematic, but it's precision might be pretty low due to the inconsistency of form across different styles. One might imagine running some sort of classification algo first across all images here on the site as it is. Rather than allowing for our perceptions of what define styles, let the algo segment them in an unsupervised fashion and see what it spits out.

All in all this seems like a lot for very little return. But, a fun thought exercise no less. I think the segmentation in the last paragraph is the most interesting possibility. See what we missed but a machine sees across styles.

Probably easier to just build something that re-publishes images off a specific account. There's either XML feeds or APIs to most data on the internet and scraping specific sources isn't too tough. I'd bet that there's already a plugin available for it, but also think that human curated content is still far better. At least for now.

Personally, I love threads that make me think or introduce new ideas or content. Find that @Mercerhas been on a roll lately in that regard. When there's images too, then all the better.

I don't have any kids but I wouldn't care if he ended up on this forum because I'd find out his username then I'd have Mero roast his ass with information provided by me. I'd be like welcome to the internet kid.

I grew up on the internet going on AOL chatrooms and other types of social networking. Looking back on it I had no business being on some of those sites ? for any of you brown folks that remember MiGente in the early 2000's

I discovered this place in 2006 because I was trying to make a marker so I could go tag on shit and I didnt discover channel zero until way later one.

There are crazier things in life there are kids out there who get smoked for posting some dumbshit on facebook or instagram.

I get more pictures of peoples buttholes and pixelated vaginas trying to add me as a friend on instagram then I ever did here.

Overall I think the site is fairly tame. They would have to get hooked and dig in deep to find something that would be questionable.

My biggest concern about kids growning up these days is the amount of incest porn that’s going around.

I agree with @mn1_fuckos  you gotta come here because your wanting to learn some shit about graffiti and then you’ll find you way to other areas.

Which brings this question to play.

How would you feel about your kids painting?

Meh, painting isn’t reallyba consideration where I live until they’re old enough to drive. Even then, it’s likely freights. That said, don’t think either kid has the personality for it.

But yeah, reality is this place is mostly a reflection of the internet as a whole so nothing worse than what you’d easily find elsewhere online.
