^reminds me of when jamie oliver went to west virginia and the children did not know where french fries came from.

at least they were kids.

 

i am way late to this party but basil is really easy for me to grow.

dunno why there's be problems.. it's practically a weed.

 

and yes, it's important to pick the flowers - that's the best way to get it to grow more.

pick the leaves, not the stems, from the top down.

 

some say not to use the stems but i've heard from chefs that the stems can have even more flavor than the leaves, so i just chop it all finely.

It depends on the use. If I were using basil in a marinade for something I intended to roast or in a soup I would use the stems. If it were just getting a quick saute I probably wouldn't, depending on the stem as they can get woody with age. Same thought on a pesto--young stems would get used for sure.
