Yay for East Asia.

Shifty place for shifty people.

maddddd shifty

my word to describe Bangkok is: Chaos

did you meet a lot of nice preeple?

i met people, some were nice

Cambodians were very cool. really friendly and open.

my man struck up a conversation with several cool people.. some lithuanians and a father-daughter from Detroit. the dad took each of his kids on a trip to any '3rd world or impoverished nation' of their choice after they graduated high school. this trip would be his last, he was with his youngest daughter. she'd picked Vietnam.

meeting people isn't a priority for me though

nice! how long were you gone fer?

we went for 10 days.

whirlwind style.

Welcome to Battambang, Cambodia

IMG_0925_zps0d19276d.jpg

i was so glad my man knew about this place and their Bamboo Train

one of the most fun things i've done as a tourist

IMG_0902_zpsc7bb6bf6.jpg

play chicken with the other rail cars

IMG_0908_zps678021b6.jpg

disassemble and reassemble

travel onward

there is also a famous migration of bats there daily

they went on for so long we eventually got bored and moved on

word. carving donuts.

and those donuts were good.

the food in thailand WAS good, one of the only things i liked.

as for bucket lists, i have been trying to plan a trip to Madagascar. that's on my list.

awesome trip!

always love a travel thread

thanks

2 days in Bangkok is one day too long

i actually agree

Request for more info about the bamboo train immediately.

the basic background:

Cambodia's insanity happened (if you don't know about Pol Pot, axe somebody.)

their infrastructure was basically destroyed

but there had once been a rail network so lines existed

people's needs combined with ingenuity and people began making rail 'cars' out of wheel trucks, bamboo platforms, and improvised engines.. i think a lot of them are just motorbike engines

these 'bamboo railways' served as the naton's only form of motorized transport apparently for awhile.

but people got cars and trucks and shit and eventually in most places the bamboo rail went away

it has survived in Battambang

somebody made a tourist attraction out of it but locals do still use it as well, we saw a family transporting goods while we were taking our ride.

there is a decently sized line: it's a quite a few miles but they don't take the tourists as far as it goes

the driver went REALLY fast

globetrotter symbolaya

word.

next fall i'm going to portugal, finally. and morocco.

while Dubai was opulent and expansive, Bangkok was dirty and chaotic, Hong Kong was just awesome. i like it there a lot. not surprising, i love cities by mountains and the sea.
