blood fart
My first tattoos were self-done stick-and-pokes. At the age of 13. Under the influence of massive amounts of cheap whiskey. Done with a syringe and India Ink. On my fingers. I didn't do any for a while. Then around the age of 18, while running from the law...I decided to make it a weekly thing. Done with my hobo friends. While sitting on the sidewalk. It was a "bonding" thing. I let a 15 year old runaway tattoo my face. Then I took him to SF. He disappeared one day. Then about 10 years later, I ran into him again. In Dallas. He was successful at whatever job he had. And a member of Half Dead. That was well-known for giving people hand-pokes. Stick Pin Ben was his name. I left them alone for a number of years. Concentrated on getting old ones covered up. With things bigger and better. Then a few years ago I once again picked up my sewing needle and India Ink. Gave myself one as a symbol of a super good friendship with a person on here. It has a circus tent. And some letters. TSCB. Its Top Secret. Now that I am in my 30's. And have a lot of really nice tattoos, I have once again gotten back into these things. We have Sunday night dinner parties. After dinner, we give each other and ourselves tattoos. It's fun. And some good stuff has come out of it. Like memories. 3 of us have matching "WHAT WE DO IS SECRET" tattoos. Cute stuff. Here's one of those things I make. This thing on my leg took me a few hours. The only pic I have where you can see what a mess my fingers are. Blurry, but this thing is super cute. chopsticks did that clipper ship with LDN. When I was in London, duh. and rolling nowhere did that snake thing. in his kitchen. Heavy Metal Mustard Party. Save the remarks about how there's already a BAD TATTOO thread. Anyone else? Also. Everything about this is awesome.

theprotester
Surely that's not hygienic? How do you go in the days after the process?
blood fart
Fairly hygienic. New needles come sterile. New caps each time. Saran wrap on the work surface. Clean rinse water, clean paper towels. ...sometimes. Not always. The only one I've ever had problems with was a tooth I did on my arm. In memory of a tooth I had pulled. In the first few days after it was done, I went to Schlitterbahn. AKA The Hottest Coolest Time In Texas. (a water park that is river water) Bobbing around in river water all day made it go gross. It didn't get super gnar though. Just looked gross for a week. Then faded fast. I just treat em like other tattoos. Wash em twice a day. Use Aquaphor. No problems. theprotester
Fair enough. Seems like borderline self mutilation to me, but we're all different.
eviltrailer77
Some of my first tattoos where stick and pokes, followed by a couple from a homemade gun all from a buddy that went on to tattoo professionally. All are covered by real tats now, mostly done by the guy that did my stick and pokes. Come full circle and all that.
shameless self promotion
No tattoos here. When the shit goes down, I don't want any distinguishing markings on me.
theprotester
I just change my mind too much to do anything permanent. I guess that's what confuses me, mainly the people I know that are 'tatted up' are people that have made terrible life choices - which is what initially turned me off them. When I was a young lad, I used to cop dope from an older bloke, I had to catch two trains and ride my bike for about half an hour just to get there, his house was decrepit, he was too, and he had a tattoo on his forearm, which was the name of his ex-wife. Stuck with me, yo.
theprotester
Forgot, just for reference, dope = marijuana where I live/d.
Fist 666
The idea that you have to like it for life is pretty common. I'm quite sure I'll eventually think some of mine are dumb. Or hilarious. Or just be a memory. But some images are simply timeless. My panther is never going to mean more or less than "panther" and its always going to look awesome. Unless I become a burn victim. Life is too dumb to take so seriously. I never did stick and pokes. At the age when I should have been I was more into trying to scarify myself. I'm glad those healed/are covered now. I tried once to make a scar into a tattoo by rubbing ink into an open wound. It didn't hold. glad too because I don't need a NOFX tattoo... theprotester
Agreed. I'm not passing judgement. Just passing on my own experience. These days tattoos are becoming a bit of a fashion accessory. I fully respect people that have loved ones/lost ones permanently attached to them. Like I said, we're all different. I don't discriminate on people that walk in here covered in ink - but I'm starting to hear 'where's your tats?' and words to that effect in conversation. I always thought the idea of the tattoo was that it was for you, and not for everyone else. Do you remember when you didn't take a photo of every single piece of graffiti you did? I'm feeling old now.
Crocodile Tears
I dont have a single tattoo, or piercing. I have no idea why. I don't think I believed in something enough. Or I never wanted to communicate something that badly. Or maybe tattoos are either something you figuratively get or you just don't get. If I ever got something I always fantasized it would be cthulhu related around my neck. Maybe Im better off staying clean. Too much rebellion. Fist 666
Haha. I hear you on that. I was just saying, you'll probably never find an image that you want on you for life. So let it be a memento from a time in your life. If you want one or kind of like the idea of one.
BloodyWishes
My wife has some. Ankle shits. I almost, but never got ink of any kind during my adolescence. Almost all my friends are covered. I'm pretty much in the boat of not wanting distinguishing marks. Blending in has benefits...
Crocodile Tears
Funny everyone came here at the same time with a similar idea. I got a phone call when I was writing my response and by the time I replied there were 3 more posts above mine.

shameless self promotion
I do have to admit though, if i got tattoos it would be like the Japanese body tattoos. Clothed normally no one could tell what awesomeness lies beneath. Like superman or some shit... OT I guess. Kindadrunknerdoner out.

Panthers are forever cool. As are snakes, skulls, and daggers. If it is cool when it's made, it will be cool forever. Even if it fades and your skin wrinkles...it just adds more character to it. Lately, I have been doing ones that I shoulda done when I was 13. PMA on my hand. Black Flag bars on my palm. The one I am about to do is gonna take the cake when it comes to teenage icons. For me, it's not about everything having to have some deep meaning behind it. It's about getting things that I like to look at. I have ones from when I was 18 that I still like. They were done well and have held up well and even though that was a shit time in my life, there were good times and it reminds me of those times. Remember the good, forget the bad. He now has 2 stick and pokes. That "killroy was here" up there. And a WHAT WE DO IS SECRET. I don't want him to get a whole lot of tattoos. And he doesn't want me to get my back, stomach, or back of my thighs. We'll see what happens with that.
BloodyWishes
I always thought, IF I got a tattoo, it would either be my entire chest, or entire back. Something large yet hidden. But I doubt I ever will. I like the Killroy. And for pokes they're not bad at all.
blood fart
Even with no visible tattoos....he does not "blend in". I don't like plain things. I am going to take more pics this weekend of the rest of em. My one friend has some super super good ones. I did one on this chick last weekend that was RIP in Nordic runes for her good friend that just passed away. I like stuff like that.

Fist 666
I like pure things. hell yeah aryan brother. in the NW i blend in. everybody has sleeves. necks and hands are super common. its grittier there. in CO i stand out with sleeves. i tend to like girls that don't have any tattoos because so many have shitty terrible ones. flying cupcakes and non-ironic unicorns that are done so terribly that its offensive to look at. oh well. nobody loves me... morton
One thing worse than shitty adolescent tattoos is cover ups that are worse. A good friend of mind used to have the names to a few black sabbath songs on his arm from a 14 year old with a machine made from a walkman, now they are covered up with flames. I am a fan of letting the old shit ride but it seems the owners always want to buff it over. I for one have none, remember thinking it would be cool and then getting booked and being glad that I had no identifying body marks. I do think that kids today make some goofy ass tattoo choices. I generally do not wear shirts with graphics though so perhaps I am the odd one. Those homemade ones look good fwiw.
